Richard Mattick Obituary

Of Barrington, IL Richard Walter Mattick was born on February 2, 1937 in Chicago to Walter and Clara (nee Pearson) Mattick. He died Saturday, January 27, 2018 in Park Ridge, Illinois. Richard was the President and co-owner of Mattick Business Forms, a family run company that was started in Chicago in 1921. He was also the owner of Mattick Antiques, which he operated with his wife, specializing in 19th and early 20th century oriental rugs, country primitive collectibles and fine art. Richard was a classically trained pianist; however, he spent his performing career focused on traditional jazz music, embracing styles from Swing to New Orleans Dixieland. He was the band leader of the Dick Mattick Swingtet and a fixture at Hackney's restaurant in Glenview through the 1990's and early 2000's, where he also led many St. Patrick Day sing-a-longs at the piano. He also led several Mardi Gras services in Chicagoland churches. Richard attended William Howard Taft High School in Chicago and was a graduate of the printing management program at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, PA where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After college, he entered into service in the Navy where he was a communication officer aboard the Aircraft Carrier the USS Oriskany. Richard was a true Chicago sports fan, especially loyal to the Cubs, Blackhawks, and DePaul basketball in the Ray Meyer years. Richard and his wife were also extensive flower and vegetable gardening enthusiasts, and long-standing members of the Chicago Botanical Gardens. The family also spent many summer months in the Colorado Rockies and Smoky Mountains of Tennessee enjoying the outdoors. Richard is survived by his children, Richard K. "Rick" (Donna) Mattick and Lynne (Ed) Payne; his six grandchildren, Clara and Anna Mattick, and Lindsey, Lyle, Logan and Lilly Payne; and his brother Howard (Londa) Mattick. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Lynne Mattick; by his parents and by his sister, Diane Weichelt. Visitation from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Friday, February 9, 2018 at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (4 blocks south of Palatine Rd.), Arlington Heights. A funeral service, including a jazz tribute, will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00am at Presbyterian Church of Barrington, 6 Brinker Road, Barrington Hills. Richard will lie in state for last respects beginning an hour before the service. Interment is at Ridgewood Cemetery in Des Plaines immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Potomac River Jazz Club (http://www.prjc.org/). Funeral Information and condolences can be given at www.GlueckertFuneralHome.com or (847) 253-0168.

We are saddened to learn of Dick's passing. We attended Taft H.S. with him and remember him fondly. He helped us bring together some of our class reunions. He lived in the Edgebrook neighborhood of Chicago as did I. He lost his wife, Sara, fairly recently. At our last class reunion he seemed to entertain us non-stop with his wonderful piano playing...I wonder if he even stopped long enough to eat! He was an intelligent, talented, kind-hearted gentleman, and he will be greatly missed! Pat and Bob Eischen
