Roger Cole Obituary

Roger Bruce Cole, aged 85, passed away peacefully at home with hospice care on July 15, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ann, and four children: Gary Cole (Amy) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Laurie Radovan (Matt) of Santa Cruz, California; Dan Cole (Debbie) of Lodi, Wisconsin; and Nancy Cole of Chicago, as well as five grandchildren - Graham and Alaina Cole, Alex Radovan, and Hannah and Sophie Cole. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Eleanor Goodfriend Cole; his brothers Robert and Richard Cole; and his newborn grandson Abraham Cole. Roger was born January 2, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Shaker Heights High School and the University of Michigan, where he earned a B.A. in Philosophy, swam freestyle for legendary coach Matt Mann and wrote music and lyrics for award-winning shows. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland. He served his residency first at the San Francisco County Hospital on the Stanford Service and later at the Children's Convalescent Home in Palo Alto, California. Roger proudly served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, stationed at Oakland Naval Hospital in California. He moved to Chicago in 1962 to begin a fellowship in the newly emerging field of pediatric cardiology at Children's Memorial Hospital where he was associated with renowned surgeon Willis J. Potts. Roger served over four decades on the faculty of Northwestern University Medical School where he achieved the rank of clinical professor. During his distinguished career, he won acclaim as Outstanding Teacher of the Year in recognition of his commitment to resident education. In 1972/73 he spent a sabbatical year in London, first at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and later at the British Medical Association where he authored a monograph to guide pediatricians in diagnosing congenital heart conditions. In 1982, at the age of 50, Roger launched his own private practice, which became and remains one of the leading pediatric cardiology groups in the Midwest. He pioneered the concept of establishing satellite clinics, bringing his expertise to patients by traveling to distant and underserved communities from Valparaiso, Indiana to Great Lakes Naval Station. Throughout his time in private practice he continued to train young doctors, offering much sought-after rotations in his office. After his retirement, The Children's Heart Foundation conferred its Lifetime Achievement Award on Roger in 2015. A memorial celebration of Roger's life will be held on Sunday, July 23 at 3:00 p.m. in Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. Memorial gifts may be made in the name of Roger B. My continued condolences to the Cole family at the loss of such a wonderful man.
I was one of his first patients at Children´s, from the time I was three until I was 18. He saved my life when I was 4 years old, when my heart was in tachycardia above 300 bpm for 36 hours. He continued to follow my progress as an adult, and assured me that my PAT would not prevent me from having children of my own.
He was kind, assuring, gentle and always warmed up his stethoscope before he listened to my heart. Thank you for my life, Dr Cole. May your memory be eternal!

He was such a magnificent person, he saved my life. I was one of his early 70’s patients. He was a true angel and he is looking down at all of us , telling us to live life to the fullest. As we used to say to each other. Roger, Roger!

I just learned of Dr. Cole's passing. Dr. Cole was our son's cardiologist in 1984. Dr. Cole recommended almost immediate surgery for our 4 month old son, Michael. I can't begin to express my heartfelt appreciation for all that Dr. Cole did for our son and for us! Whenever we were discouraged about our son's impending surgery, we would call Dr. Cole and he continually reassured us that Michael would be fine. Dr. Cole had that "Marcus Welby" personality and smile...he was always the doctor you could count on, to help you "keep the faith"! We have sent him Christmas cards, every year, with pictures of our now, 34 yr. old son. Thank you, Dr. Cole, for all that you did for moms, dads and children, wrestling with heart conditions. More importantly, thank you for your reassuring smile, wonderful bedside manner and the genuine care you showed every family you worked with. God bless and may you rest in peace!

Dr Cole was my cardiologist when I was admitted with sub aortic stenosis in 1972. I was 13 and terminal. The CMH team was the best of the best and I cant be thankful enough as I celebrate my 60th birthday. Thanks

Our deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of one of the best pediatric surgeons. He saved the live of our little angel on l976. Ellyn was born with VSD and we were told she wouldn't live to see her first year birthday. With my determination I bundled Ellyn up in my car and drove to Children's Memorial and told the receptionist I had an appointment with Dr. Cole. Prior to that time he didn't have an opening for over 3 months but I knew I couldn't wait that long. When we reached the examine room and met Dr. Cole I told him the truth about not having an appointment with him. With his gorgeous smile he told me not to worry and that he would take care of her of which he did. We will never forget him and pray that he rests in peace.

As we sat around our Christmas dinner table (even though we're Jewish) we starting talking about Dr. Cole and how he saved our angel's life. When she was born we were told she wouldn't live to see her first year birthday because she had a VSD and that was in 1976. Here it is 41 years later and she asked me to find out where he is. We're terrible upset that we lost one of the best pediatric cardiologists ever. I'm now living in Tampa but my daughter Ellyn lives at Lambs Farm. When we first saw Dr. Cole, we couldn't get in to see him because he was booked and we were told we'd have to wait a few months. With my determination i went to children's hospital and told the receptionist I had an appointment and they must have forgotten to write it down. When we finally walked into the examine room, Dr. Cole came in and I told him what I had done. With that gorgeous smile of his, he told me not to worry and that he would take care of my daughter. We will never forget him, and offer you our deepest condolences.

Our son Brett was born with a VSD in 1986. At 6 months of age we took Brett to see Dr. Cole at his warm, cheerful, child-friendly office across from Childrens' Memorial hospital. His kindly manner and sensitivity to our parental fears were so reassuring, we instantly knew we were in expert and caring hands. Following open heart surgery in 1990 Brett has been able to thrive and become an accomplished athlete and fine young man. Dr. Cole was always there for us, right from the beginning. He was an angel sent to us during a very frightening period in our lives. God bless, and rest in peace.

Dr. Cole was my pediatric cardiologist for many, many years, and he was one of the finest physicians I've ever met. As an adult, he became one of my dearest friends, and I am going to miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with his family as we all grieve this tremendous loss.

Dr. Cole was an amazing doctor, a true gentleman, and a kind and caring man. He gave us hope when our daughter was a baby and we were not getting a lot of positive feedback from other doctors. She is now 33 years old and doing well. We will always be grateful to Dr. Cole for his wisdom and practical advice. May he rest in peace.

We went to see Dr Cole directly from the hospital after our son was born. After he examined our newborn, I remember asking him if he was a "cock-eyed optimist" or a realist. He said he was an optimistic realist. Thanks to Dr. Cole -- and many other wonderful Docs at CMH - our son survived several difficult procedures to deal with TOF. He is now an MD/PhD, pediatric rheumatologist at Cincinnati Childrens. We will not forget Dr. Cole's kind, clear support through those terrifying early years. Please accept our condolences.

My condolences to your family. Dr. Cole was my daughter's first cardiologist. For the first 14 years of her life, he was our rock. I cannot find the words to describe our love for Dr. Cole.
