Roger Miller Obituary

Roger Henry (Harpo) Miller died surrounded by family and friends on August 6, 2022. Born in Chicago to Bernard and Marjorie (Ames) Miller, Roger spent most of his life as a resident of the North Shore. He graduated from New Trier High School and studied a semester at Dartmouth College before joining the army in 1943. After completing his tour, Roger returned to his parents' home in Wilmette and finished his college education at Northwestern University.

Before settling down, Roger spent two years "bumming' around Europe where he met his first wife, Ingrid Elisabet (Siewert) Miller, in the halls of Alliance Francaise in Paris. They were married in Gothenburg, Sweden, and after a long honeymoon in Europe settled down in Evanston where Elisabet gave birth to Ralph, the first of four children, while Roger started his career at HECO Envelope Company. Over the next decade, Ralph was joined by a brother, Geoff, and two sisters, Ingrid and Eva.

Roger bought HECO in 1963 at the age of 38. During his time as owner and CEO, he served two terms as President of The Envelope Manufacturers Association and was a member of The Young Presidents Organization for a decade.

That same year, Roger moved his young family to Winnetka. Taking his civic duties seriously, he served as Chairman of the Winnetka Environmental Council, Chairman of the Green Bay Trail Committee, Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, and Trustee and Treasurer of the Village of Winnetka.

Roger married his second wife, Kristin (Kjerland) Peebles, in 1979, adding her two children, Donald and Jane, to the growing family. Together the newly married couple toured the world from Hong Kong to Antarctica. Whether by sea, air or on foot, Roger and Kristin always looked forward to the next adventure.

Roger follows his beloved Kristin, who passed on March 10, 2021, on their final adventure. They're survived by six children and thirteen grand children. A memorial service for Kristin and Roger will be held at Holy Comforter Church in Kenilworth on November 23, 2022 at 11am. A reception will follow.

I recall meeting Mr. Miller as a young stockman at Heco in February 1983. I was very impressed at his friendliness and professional demeanor. Though the name changed to Mail-Well in the future, I will never forget the familial atmosphere and care of the employees. And yes, I even remember Michael Allen Meister.
