Ronald Hansen Obituary

Ronald Kenneth Hansen passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2023. He was born on October 20, 1930. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley (married 67 years), and his sister, Marlene. He was the loving father of Rick (Mitchelle), Re'Lynn (Doreen), and John (Julie); devoted grandfather to Brian (MacKenzie), Stephen (Camy) and Hailee (Grant); great grandfather to Boden; and uncle, family, and friend to many in the United States and Norway.

He and his wife, Shirley, founded Hansen Realty and The Chicago Real Estate Institute for licensing agents. Ron simply believed in helping others. He served as an MP in Germany during the Korean War. He volunteered with Wrightwood Neighbors and Taste of Lincoln Avenue. He spearheaded many drives for funds, clothing, food, and shelter. He rarely missed a firepit gathering in his Chicago neighborhood of The Villa. A voracious learner, he was taking Norwegian lessons beyond the age of 90.

He spent summers in Lakeside, Michigan where he fed the pond catfish and harvested a bountiful garden (countless tomatoes and radishes) with the extensive help of family and friends. He was a great storyteller, often recounting his trip down the Mississippi by raft. He loved good conversation, good food, and the olives from his wife's martinis.

He proudly wore his Viking hat at Halloween and beyond. Illinois drivers knew him from his "Odin" license plate. He loved playing the horn, especially the two songs he knew well- Happy Birthday and When The Saints Go Marching In.

Donations in memory of Ron can be sent to The Jesse White Foundation,

A celebration of Ron's life will be held on Saturday, September 16, at 11:30, at Minnekirken, Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church, 2614 N. Kedzie Blvd., Chicago, 60647. Luncheon to follow.

I was hoping to attend the service today but will not be able to. I send the Hansen Family all my best, with fond memories of Ron (and Shirley) through years of Wrightwood Neighbors meetings and events and Taste of Lincoln! Avemue.

Ron was quite a man! He gave so much back to the community and mentored many people in his efforts to help others. I was on the Board of Directors with Ron for 20 years and he was just about the hardest working person on the board when he ran the Taste of Lincoln Avenue. He was always quick with a joke and a hearty laugh, but always serious when it came to work. He was a prominent man in Lincoln Park and he and Shirley raised wonderful people in their kids and grandkids. We offer our deepest condolences and will miss him ... and his colorful TOLA pants! May he and Shirley rest in peace together again.

Very sorry to hear about Ron's passing. He did have a great life from my vantage point. I haven't seen a lot of him in recent years, but we spent a lot of time together on the board of directors of the Wrightwood Neighbors for many years, and also ran the Taste of Lincoln Avenue for quite a few. He and I had a lot of laughs together. Ironically, I saw Ron's obit in the Tribune on the day I was leaving for a Scandanavian holiday in August, which included five days in his beloved Norway. (I finally figured out why Ron had "Odin" on his license plate). I can't wait to go back to Norway and see the sights I missed and Ron is inspiring me to improve my Norwegian language skills before I go back. I have a conflict on Saturday so I can't make the Celebration of Ron's Life, but I will raise a glass to him that day for a Norwegian toast -- Skal.!!! -- you are a wonderful man.
