Sarah Hamilton Obituary

Sarah Garland Hamilton, a native Oak Parker, died at her home in the South Loop in Chicago on July 9, eight months after a diagnosis of brain cancer. She was sixty-four. Following the diagnosis she retired from her job as legal assistant at Funkhouser Vegosen Liebman & Dunn with the goal of organizing both her own affairs and her mother's. Her fervent wish was to spare her relatives confusion and fuss. A champion of elegance and clarity, she was an invaluable editor as well as organizer, as indispensible to her employers as a single person can be. She was devoted to her bosses first at Wilson & McIlvaine, then at Doyle & Bolotin, and finally at FVLD. She had not initially intended to spend her life among the varied characters at law, studying chemistry as an undergrad at the University of Illinois at Champaign. She later received her Masters in English Literature from Roosevelt, then studied French at the Sorbonne before returning to English, writing her PhD thesis at Loyola on the use of music and time in the novels of George Elliot. The novel Middlemarch sustained and amused her until the end of her life. Sarah had many devotions, including her book club of thirty years, ballet, classical music, and yoga. In gratitude, near the end, she pronounced yoga to be "the greatest boon to mankind." Her greatest devotion, however, was to her mother, caring for her though many decades and several changes of address. She is predeceased by her father, Allen Beye Hamilton. Survivors include her mother, her brothers, Duncan and Bruce, her sisters, Jeremy and Jane, her brother-in-law Bob Willard, her niece and nephews, her book club family, and many friends. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to Rainbow Hospice or Journey Care Hospice, or to the Women's Board of the Presbyterian Home, in Evanston, Illinois. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 15th, at 10 AM, at the Elliott Chapel on the Presbyterian Home campus, 3131 Simpson, Evanston, IL.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

Hello, Hamilton family - I was so sorry to hear of Sarah's passing.

I have a fond memory of a time when Sarah was telling Aunt Ruth a funny story, and Jane and I were laughing and laughing, more because of her delivery than the story itself.

My thoughts are with you.

Dear Ruth, Duncan, Bruce, Jeremy and Jane,

I was so sorry to hear of Sarah's passing, Joanie Massler Hooper told me the sad news. The Hamiltons and Flowers certainly had a close connection, many memories of us all growing up just a block apart.

My sister Lorin passed away in February, 2015, very sad that the youngest of both our families are no longer with us.

I send my best to all of you,
Steve Flowers

I met Sarah when she was studying at the Sorbonne in Paris. She was a wonderful friend. Smart and funny and kind. She helped drag my Christmas tree up to my fifth floor garret and decorate it with popcorn strings. We celebrated Thanksgiving and birthdays and our occasional successes in the French language. After coming home we stayed good friends, but unfortunately never lived in the same city again. I wish we had. I am so grateful she was in my life. Sarah will always have a special place in my heart.

I remember Sarah from when we were children and remember seeing her often when she came to play with one of my sisters. I am saddened to hear of her early death and send love and condolences to all of my Hamilton "cousins" and to Aunt Ruth.

Sarah worked for me in the early 1970's at Wilson & McIlvaine. She was a very fine young woman and was excellent at her work. John D. Lien

I met Sarah in Oak Park, as a young girl. She and her family lived two blocks away. I think it was Scoville Ave and we lived on Wesley Ave.
We shared relatives; her mother was the sister of an uncle by marriage.
She and I became close friends and decided to be blood sisters. We pierced our fingers and shared our blood together. We also adored Ben Casey and Richard Chamberlain. Then we moved away and I would only hear about her through our shared relatives. She remains my blood sister.
Om Shanti, Sarah. I am now teaching yoga and will dedicate my next practice to you.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah just once in Boston years ago. She was as lovely and elegant and intelligent as her two devoted sisters and I felt honored to be in the company of the Hamilton gals. She will be missed.

Dear Family of Sarah,

Your daughter and sister sounds like a wonderful, terribly intelligent and good woman. I am sorry that her beautiful mind was so devastated by brain cancer.

My son Garrett died last year of Glioblastoma. He was 39 and left a 7-year old daughter.

I made some bumper stickers: No More Brain Cancer. I would be happy to share some of these with you if you are interested.

Your family are in my prayers.

Dearest Ruth, so sad to hear of Sarah's passing. During our association, I got to know Sarah reasonably well, and even had the privilege of hearing her agonize over the subtleties of George Elliot. I knew her during her Middlemarch period, when you were good friends with my late husband Peter Boekhoff. You were a godsend to me after his unexpected passing. You had 2 friends named Barb, so you use to call me "Barb in Elmhurst". I wish you peace, and know how empty the Sarah place will be for you. Remembering you with love, Barb Burghardt
