Sidney J. Hess Jr., beloved husband of the late Jacqueline, nee Engelhardt; dear father of Karen E. Freeman, and Lori Hess (Clark Pleiss); adored grandfather of Robyn Freeman; fond brother of the late John R. Hess and Elsie Schofler. Memorial services Friday, 12 Noon at Temple Sholom, 3480 N. Lake Shore Drive. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sidney J. Hess Jr. and Jacqueline E. Hess Philanthropic Fund of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, 30 S. We are sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He and Jackie were wonderful friends to our family. They were both so happy at your wedding. You were truly fortunate to have had the love and togetherness of them both for so long. Sid earned the affection and respect of the entire Chicago community.

I was 2 years out of law school when Aaron, Aaron, Schimberg & Hess took a chance on hiring me as an associate. The senior partners were all gentlemen of the old school and community leaders in an era when law was actually a learned profession. From Sidney (and Charlie, Ely and Lew as well), I learned---I hope--to become a mentsch, a man, and a lawyer who lived up to professional and community responsibilities. Sidney was awesome in his incisive judgment, omnipresent dignity and abillity to perform with excellence in many different roles as a lawyer, including arguing a case. His passing leaves an irreparable void in our profession and community as well as to his family, clients, colleagues and friends. Most sincerely, Joel J. Sprayregen

I was very saddened to learn of Mr. Hess's death. I worked with Mr. Hess at D'Ancona & Pflaum, later merging with Seyfarth Shaw. I will always be grateful for Mr. Hess's confidence and trust in me! When he asked me to type his Life Memoire & gave me a huge plant, I was truly elated. (I still have a copy & would like to give it to you) He'd always make me smile when I'd hear him call me "JoJo"! Barbara, Anne, Reuel and Rosie are sending love and blessings for healing. I am thinking of the wonderful lunches we had at the Standard Club when I came to Chicago. We are still in Aspen and were saddened at the news of Sid's passing. We will miss his wonderful smile and twinkle in his eye as he greeted us in the building. Our thoughts will be with you tomorrow at his funeral.
