STEVEN PAYNE Obituary

Steven Jeffrey Payne, age 20, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family on Oct. 15, 2009. He was the precious son of Jeff and Claudia Payne; loving brother of Kyle and Ryan Payne; nephew, cousin, and friend of many. "We define ourselves by the best that is in us, not the worst that has been done to us." To begin to show his humor, one would have to view a video on Facebook. To begin to understand his friendships, one would need to be at his house for a Bags tournament. And to start to know his significance within family, one would have to hear the stories and laughter he created. Steve was born June 24, 1989, and diagnosed with cancer at age 15. He fought a heroic battle, demonstrating strength and courage most could not match. He was known for his unanticipated witty humor and laid back, persevering attitude. His passion was basketball, always competing with his brothers and friends in the backyard, then continuing on to play at Lyons Township High School. Even with cancer, Steve's smile was contagious and his ability to endure, inspiring. Spending time with loved ones, especially family and friends at the family cottage in Wisconsin, was what he cherished most. He will be laid to rest next to his grandparents, John and Ginny Payne, in Three Lakes, WI. Steve will be greatly missed by all. Christ Church of Oak Brook at 31st and York Rd. will hold a visitation for family and friends, Saturday, Oct. 24, 9 a.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Reception to follow at Jack and Pam Payne's house, 4825 Johnson Ave., Western Springs. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Make a Wish Foundation of Illinois at www.wishes.org.

Dear Payne family we are very sorry to hear of your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Having had the opportunity to interact with your family(s) at the cottage, I can think of no better place than next to his grandparents overlooking the lake. The cottage is a place that brought and brings your family together.

May God be with you in your time of need and in the future.

Our sympathy to your whole family for your loss. I'm glad I got to see his smiling face last summer in Hinsdale. I also think of you when we pass through Three Lakes on our way to Eagle River. Laurie Fritz has talked of going up there often. We head up there next week and I will say a prayer as we pass through. God bless you, Molly Butler

I was lucky enough to have Steve as a student at LT. Despite his illness, he came to class with a smile and energy that I remember so clearly. I heard from another former student about Steve's passing, and I am so very sorry. My prayers are with you!
