STUART BAKER Obituary

Stuart James Baker, July 28, 1958 - Oct. 6, 2012. A handsome man in a sharp suit and kind smile. The definition of a true gentleman, consummate host, the man who added class to the group, held the guys together, always extended a hand, the caregiver in our group of friends, the rock at times when some needed that most. He saw the best in people and guaranteed fun had by all. A chorus of heartfelt remembrances of our beloved Stuart also includes: Your warmth and kind heartedness always meant so much to me. Your smile is contagious. Your strength is undeniable. You have made this world a better place with the ways you have touched the hearts of all of your friends, family and customers. You know how to enjoy life. Your style, integrity, generosity and attitude are the standard by which others should be judged. I can't recall a single instance in the past 15 years when you weren't in a terrific mood. Stuart left his body peacefully among loved ones, Saturday night, after a valiant journey with trying to beat cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Natalie Boitchouk and two beautiful daughters, Sasha and Arianna, who will always remember the joy and laughter that daddy brought into our lives. He is also survived by sisters Marian Baker, Cynthia Waggoner and Janet Nevalainen, other family and many dear friends. We trust that he has joined his parents Glen and Gibby Baker (of Des Plaines, IL) in infinite peace, playing cards together in heavenly realms. Stuart was an "Allstar" in his career at Nordstrom, Michigan Ave. - "with a remarkable talent to not only make men look their best, but feel their best in what they were wearing." May we all honor Stuart by trying to be our best in how we greet each day and make a positive impact on all those lives we touch. Memorial, Friday, Oct. 12, 4 to 8 p.m., (service at 6 p.m.) Benson Funeral Home, 3224 W. Montrose Ave. 773-478-5800 You may also leave a message at www.chicagomemorial.com

Oct 6 2024 will be the 12-year anniversary of when Stuart left his body suit. Wow. It's amazing to read and remember what so many people said about him- how he touched their lives, was a rare and wonderful positive spark - always smiling, helpful, kind, and so on. As his sister, and the person closest to him in his final months, I saw many sides of this lovely and hurting human being. (I happen to be watching a film about a young man dying of cancer, which inspired me to come over here). He'd call me every morning- "I'm up. When are you coming?" and I'd get out of bed and head over. The day he lost all his hair was hard for him. I shaved the clumps off and we tried to joke about him being newly handsome with a Bruce Willis look. And in the final weeks, he'd say quietly, "I'm running out of gas, Mar." I have many moments of being grateful for every bleeping breath we get to inhale and exhale and what we do with each day's worth. Stuart needed an oxygen tank and ran out of breath and heart beats at some point. He lives on in our smiles, our joy, our heart beats- both cheerful and sad, and our gratitude for every moment we get to live this precious, sacred journey. He'd want you to have fun, to treat yourself well, to order the good champagne and enjoy wearing a nice suit well-tailored just for you that made you feel like a million bucks. He sang karaoke "Twist and Shout" the night before his last breath. So- keep on dancing and enjoying the party and please raise your glass to our beloved Stuart on Oct 6. Cheers!

I knew Stuart in the eighties when we were both working with a gal trying to start a modeling agency. I remember him fondly as the most handsome and gentle of men. So sorry to find out he passed away in 2012. So happy he married a wonderful gal and has two girls as a living legacy of his life! He walks Heavenly Hall´s and brightens them just by his behavior v there. He will be missed here, I know..prayers for his wife and family....

Never get tired of this email or re-reading this thread of great stories. Here is an updated photo of William "Stuart" Hanlon. We found out that we were having the twins at the same time you were leaving us on earth. Nothing more to say other than that I truly miss your friendship.

I want to light a candle for Stuart tonight because my core feels such love and heartache. I miss him, and still find it hard that he is gone, even after all these years. He would want me and all of us to have a good time, to order the good champagne and be thoughtful and kind to each other and to extend a generous helping hand and care to people who don't have much family or friends and maybe on their own. He'd want us to include them in the fun, and check in on them to make sure they are doing ok. I see him playing host at some heavenly event, dressed well and asking new arrivals what they'd like to drink.

Toasting to You, Stuart, on the day you were born.. we celebrate who you are and all that you gave to us! I think of you and miss you every day. My life is better - filled with blessings- in part because of your love and help with deliveries from "The Heaven Catalog" (You must have started the "Nordstrom special services department up there - ha!) LOVE ALWAYS

Miss your smile. Miss your style. Miss your charming personality. But most of all we just miss your friendship and the positive impact it had on our lives.

You continue to travel with our family on vacations and some of your ashes are now resting in some beautiful places. Hope you are enjoying the views!

Shortly after you passed Nicole and I were blessed to have a son named William "Stuart" Hanlon. He helps us to keep your flame alive. And we both hope that his personality turns out just like yours!

Super Stuart, our hero in heaven :-)

John Svoboda

December 26, 2012

I learned of Stuart's passing just last week. My wife called Nordstrom's to make an appointment and received the news from one of his colleagues.
Stuart started working for Svoboda's Men's Wear in Des Plaines in 1975 as part of a "work/study" program where a student could get some practical experience and course credit. Then a junior at Maine West high school, Stuart joined my father, grandfather, Ken Wink and various tailors.Stuart "graduated" from stockboy to become a well regarded and sought after salesman as his career continued.
Loyal until the store's closing in 1994, Stuart joined Nordstrom's on Michigan Avenue where he became the premier salesman in the men's department.
Stuart touched four generations of our family. He worked with my grandfather Frank sr. (deceased), my father Frank and with my brother Paul and myself. My dad and Stuart would have lunch a few times each year, and myself and my two sons were outfitted by Stuart over the past several years. Stuart was like family to us. He worked hard in the early years to buy and maintain his gold Cutlass which was a showpiece he was proud of. He always had a smile and was more interested in talking about others than himself. Small surprise that his customers wanted to meet with Stuart, even if it meant waiting.
I vaguely recall Stuart mentioning treatment for skin cancer when I saw him in march. He said it was "no big deal",he looked fine and I assumed everything would be fine. I am deeply saddened that I didn't follow-up to monitor his progress.
As we celebrated Christmas, we recalled so many fond memories of Stuart--his smile, his patience, his love of his family and his pride at being the best at his craft. His selfless attitude made anyone who knew him better for it. The Svoboda family collectively mourns the loss of Stuart, but feel fortunate that he touched and enriched us through four generations of our family, over more than 37 years.
Although we did not have a chance to meet Stuart's wife and daughters, he spoke about you with admiration and great pride when we were together. We hope that memories of his smile and love for you will sustain you in the coming weeks and months.
Please accept our family's deepest sympathies for your loss.

I had the honor of meeting Stu during difficult moments, yet his heart allowed me to know who he always was and that "stupid cancer" was not about to change that in any way! His spirit now soars in realms beyond our reach, but if we close our eyes we continue to feel his presence guiding those he loves. My heart goes out to his precious family as they continue without his direct influence in this life. Be patient, he watches and guides you still, simply from afar now...

Karen and I will miss Stuart very, very much. We shopped with and through him for many years. His outstanding integrity coupled with his superb suggestions, made him the best in the business. May God bless him and his loving family.

I have been a customer of Stuart's for many years. I stopped in the store today to say hi while I was in the neighborhood and was so sorry to hear of his passing. Earlier this summer, I brought my son to see Stuart when it was time to buy his first suit. It was a proud moment for me and I was thinking just how nice it was for me to be introducing my son to Stuart, who I thought was so amazing. While I never had the chance to meet Stuart's family, I hope you will accept my condolences on your loss. My best wishes to you for strength during this difficult time.

Stuart was one of our son-in-law, Jim's and daughter, Nicole's dearest friends. Really he was more than that, he was like part of the family. We saw him almost every time we came for a visit either at their loft or at his work. He was always quick with a smile and more than accommodating at work helping me buy a tuxedo or just a tie. We will miss him but we will not forget him. Our lives are better for knowing Stuart of that we are sure. God rest his soul.

In a world where we meet and forget thousands of people, Stuart is one of those people that you always remember. He had such a presence about him, and he was so engaging and easy to talk to. He was one of my favorite people from the first time I met him and I will miss him dearly.

Our deepest sympathies to all of Stuart's family and friends. I was a customer of Stuarts back in Des Plaines at Svoboda's and followed him to Old Orchard and downtown Chicago. For over 30 years, I always enjoyed his kind smile and insightful guidance and tireless and upbeat support of his customers. He was truly the best and will be missed by all that knew him.

This has been heartbreaking news to bear. When I think of Stuart, I think of two words: "smile" and "gentleman." My thoughts go out to those who have been affected by his loss.

I was one of Stuart's many customers at Old Orchard. Of all the people from whom I've bought clothing over my long life, his name is the only one I ever remembered. May his family take comfort in the fact that many, many people grieve with them and are sorry for their loss.

Stuart LOVED candles. In a brother-sister way, he was the love of my life. This past year keeping the light going for him, with him somehow became a joyful mission every morning. I can't believe he's gone. Miss him and his morning call so much. Thank you to all who loved him and enjoyed life with him. Let his smile live on brightly with us all. Cheers to you, beloved brother in my heart forever!

Stuart was a kind warm hearted man. He was one of the first people to embrace me and show me the ins and outs of Chicago. I haves many found memories and they all include Stuart & his warm smile. I could always count on Stuart to give me that extra push during the day or to meet at the local pub after a long day on the selling floor. I hope his family and friends are able to find comfort during this time, knowing that Stuart left an everlasting impression on so many people in this world. I would give anything to be able to pay my respects to such a wonderful man. Sending lots of hugs & prayers from Texas.
