Suzanne Frank Obituary

In Memory of Suzanne Weese Drucker Frank

Blessed with a long and healthy life, Sue Weese Drucker Frank died peacefully of old age at her home in Wilmette, Illinois on the morning of November 19, 2023, aged 100. Befitting Sue's love of nature and the outdoors, the sky was as blue as the color of her beloved Glen Lake and the sunshine was streaming through her bedroom windows when she departed.

Born in Evanston, Illinois on July 17, 1923, to Harry E. Weese and Marjorie (Mohr) Weese, Sue grew up during the Great Depression in Kenilworth, Illinois where she attended the Joseph Sears school. Her years at New Trier High School, where she played Titania to Charlton Heston's Oberon in the school play, witnessed the lead up to world war. Fortunate for a woman of her era to have the opportunity to attend college, Sue is quoted by her father in his memoir as saying, "her specifications for the next place to study were a school, not too large, not co-educational, near Boston and where she knew no-one." Her decision was Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. Her father feared the east coast might be bombed so after two years at Wheaton, Sue returned home to attend Northwestern University for a year but returned to Wheaton the following year to graduate in 1945.

In 1946, upon his return from serving in the Pacific, Sue married her high school sweetheart, Bob Drucker. They moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where they lived while Bob attended Business and Law School. Daughter Ann ('48) and Suzanne "Susie" ('49) were born there before the growing family returned to the Chicago area where they built their home designed by Sue's brothers, Ben and Harry, in Wilmette. Three more children followed - William "Bill" ('51), Sally ('54) and Harry ('57).

In the ensuing years, Sue dedicated herself to rearing her children and supporting the family's numerous activities which included canoe trips in the Quetico Provincial Park, summer visits to her parent's cabin on Glen Lake in Michigan, the purchase and renovation of a farm and farmhouse near Galena, IL, and all other things that made domestic life warm and enjoyable. She also pursued her lifelong passion of watercolor painting, memorializing the many scenes she held dear.

In 1997, several years after her first marriage ended in divorce, Sue married Halbert ("Hal") Frank, the widower of Sue's friend and college roommate. Sue and Hal enjoyed 11 years of marriage, spending summers at Glen Lake, travelling around the world, and enjoying time with friends and family.

Healthy living, a positive attitude, and good fortune combined to bless Sue with a long and robust life filled with adventure. Always ready at the drop of a hat to get on a plane and join friends or family on a trip, Sue adventured around the world with her children, Hal and friends. She was a thoughtful and caring person, loyal to her friends, always gracious and graceful. She was a talented artist and avid reader. A steadfast advocate for the environment, she was a keen observer of all things in nature, especially birds. She spent every summer, including the summer of 2023, at her rustic cottage on Glen Lake where she was unable to resist the temptation to take a daily swim which she did every year except this past summer. Always cheerful, she smiled her way through 100 years.

Sue was a deeply beloved grandmother of 15, step-grandmother to 1, and great-grandmother to 22. Preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and siblings, Harry M. Weese, Jane (Weese) Welch, and John Weese, Sue is survived by her brother Ben (Cindy) Weese, her sister-in-law Margaret "Migit" Drucker, children Ann (Rick) Gleason, Susie (Jay) Brown, Bill (Denise) Drucker, Sally Drucker, Harry (Beth) Drucker, and step-child Edmund (Jo Su) Frank and, her grandchildren and step-grandchild, and great-grandchildren.

Still think about Sue so often, driving by her place on Glen Lake. She was pure fun and joy and I cherished out time together.

I had known Sue for close to my entire life. My mother and Sue would stroll me and Sally in our buggies in our Wilmette neighborhood. As the years passed, Sue became like a second mother to me. All of the adventures with her at Glen Lake, the farm, at 2801 and even a ski trip to Aspen were no short of wonderful.
Even in later years, with Larry by my side, we spent time with Sue again at Glen Lake, at 2801 and even had occasional swims with her at the Wilmette and Winnetka beaches. Larry loved Sue too. He always looked forward to a chance of being with her. She was just so natural, fun loving and easy to be with. We both loved her stories of her early years in Kenilworth, Barrington and Glen Lake.
As sad as it was, Larry and I were fortunate to be able to see Sue three days before her passing (thank you Sally!). She was a timeless lovely woman that we will never forget, Thank you Sue for all of the memories!

Love Always,
Susan and Larry Crawford

I am grateful for being a recipient of Sue Frank´s kindness and wonderful hospitality throughout my life. I can still hear her enthusiastic voice today: "Hello Woody! How are you today? How are your folks?"

Sue made my childhood better. Even when I was a sullen teen, she always greeted me as if I were someone truly special. She brought irrepressible joy and enthusiasm to me and others around her. Sue´s eyes sparkled when she spoke to you. She not only made you feel welcome; she made you feel like an honorary member of the Drucker family.
Over the years, I spent many happy days with Bill at the Drucker home in Wilmette. I was also fortunate to spend time at the Drucker farm in Western Illinois and at their Glen Lake cabin in Michigan. These places hold special, cherished memories.

Later in life, we kept in touch via family events like weddings, funerals, high school reunions, birding, hiking, and biking trips and even occasional business trips to Chicago. Last summer, Lori and I paid Sue a visit and it was wonderful to see her.

I am deeply grateful to Sue for her lifelong friendship and for including me in Drucker family activities. She enhanced my life in many ways. May she rest in peace knowing that hers was a life well-lived.

Thank you Sue for letting me be part of your last three years here on earth. I couldn´t wait to start a new day with you. Your kindness, your unselfishness, your delicious laugh, your respect for all human beings, your love for nature, made me love you more and motivated me to be more like you.
You were the forever summer on Glen Lake, the last caramel in a package of candies, the top of the top of the top...
In between dreams and lives, till the end of times we will be talking about you to ourselves, to each other and to all the other ones still to come.
Three years were
not enough, a hundred years wouldn´t be enough to listen to all of your stories. There must be somewhere that we can continue with our friendship. So I just say till we meet again dear Sue, keep my place next to you my sweet lady!

The Borbein family - Kassel, Germany

January 28, 2024

What wonderful memories the Borbein family associates with Sue. When I (Andreas) visited the other continent for the first time, she welcomed me like a mother with a warm smile and a hug in the beautiful house in Wilmette. The old log cabin in Glen Lake, blueberries with half-fat milk (which I didn't know), the small wooden island, Lake Tavern - all in the peaceful setting of a summer that felt more like a fairy tale. For my mother (Gabriele), Sue was a loving friend and the mother of her "third son." When the three of us, along with my brother Matthias, spend an entire summer in Wilmette and Glen Lake, Sue joyfully welcomed us and spent the summer with us.

My grandparents (Volkmar and Hedwig Borbein) were very, very grateful that their two grandsons, Matthias and Andreas, got to know America through Sue, the country to whom my grandfather owed so much gratitude. In his conversations with Harry, he saw the generation of grandchildren who would live in a better, kinder world.

My daughter Madeleine met Sue as a little girl when she traveled to the USA with her grandmother, and Sue gave her beautiful memories for the journey into her life.

Sue stands as a beacon for a world where we approach both humanity and nature with openness and warm hearts. She serves as a gentle reminder, urging us to wholeheartedly strive to shape our world into one of tranquility and peace.

The entire Borbein family thanks Sue and carries in their hearts the warm hugs and smiles to pass on to the world.

With profound tenderness, our smiles echo in response to hers.

I have known Sue and the Drucker family since I was a young child. Sue was a second Mom to me. She was a model of kindness and curiosity. I am so grateful to have had her in my life for so very long. We shared so much - 2801 Iroquois, Glen Lake, the farm, biking in China and so much more. Sue, I will miss you.

The summer before my 15th birthday, i was fortunate enough to be roommates with Sue as we made our trek to Australia to visit relatives. I had the best time with Sue that summer. We spent nights talking and laughing and telling each other we had to get up in a few hours and to go to sleep. You would have thought she was a teenager herself. We went on various adventures that summer in Australia. We even got into some mischief in Sydney! That was 31 years ago. Sue was in her late 60's and I a mere 14. She was a remarkable woman whom I loved dearly since I met her at age 1. I am blessed to have known. I will miss her dearly. Love to her family.

Sue was my mother's favorite cousin. Mom (Ann Peters) spent a lot of time with her Aunt Marj and her family when she was growing up. Mom talked how they´d wash their hair in Glen Lake and get the giggles in their room in the cabin. Doesn´t Sue look the same in this photo of them as girls as she did in her 90s?
Mom lit up whenever she talked about Sue. They were both stubbornly positive in attitude. But Mom didn´t have Sue´s adventurousness, and she marveled at it.
They were loving daughters of sisters who adored each other. (Along with their sister Ethel, the Mohr girls spent many winters in Florida together after they´d become widows.) Sue honored their closeness by bringing Aunt Marj to see her older sister, my grandmother Adele, for a sweet reunion at the end of their lives.
Sally and Sue echoed that visit by coming to Boulder to see Mom a few months before she died in 2016. They knew it was their last visit, which made it especially sweet, but neither of them acted sad. They simply enjoyed and loved each other, as they always had.

The world will miss Sue. Her positive spirit, friendliness, joy and quick wit defined one of my dearest friends. Our birthday group is getting smaller, but we still have love that holds forever.
Love to all of Sue´s family-she will always be with us.
