I knew Tom in high school in Vermont from 1967-1969. We were the best of teenage buddies then, and kept in touch over all the years. I only learned of his passing now 10 months later. It hurts to lose an old friend, yet my fond memories still remain on. To the other friends and family of Tom, my thoughts are with you. What a wonderful guy Tom always was.

Dear Mrs. Hermes, Jill Ann, Kathleen, Cynthia, Amy and Daniel,
What a wonderful family you are! Mrs. Hermes, you charmed me with your warmth and kindness. With parents and siblings as loving and caring as you all are, it is no wonder that Tom turned out to be the remarkable, funny, bright man he is. May God's compassionate love ease your pain. I hope you will give me the pleasure of having you to dinner whenever you can. Tom would tell you that I am not too bad as a hostess! My warmest regards and wishes to all of you and your families. God Bless you all.

My dearest Barbara, Margaret, Madeleine and Tommy,
What a wonderful memory you must have of a husband and Dad who ran while battling the most formidable illness to strike humans and animals. A husband and Dad who brought tears to everyone in church when he shared what he called " a blessing", if I remember correctly, whereas most people would feel overwhelmed and sorry for themselves. Perhaps this attitude gave him the energy and desire to make the most of life, and he did just that. He was so appreciative, so overwhelmed by the deluge of love that came his way! I think I can hear his voice saying "ok, let this be a lesson to you, show your love every chance you get!". I believe there will be many little signs from him to show you that he is with each and everyone of you 24 hours a day. How proud you must be to have him as a husband and Dad. God Bless you all, and may His love be a balm on your pain. Hopefully, one day, we'll have the answer to "Why God?". In the meantime, I send my love and a big hug to all of you.

Our thoughts and prayers to Tom's family, and our hope that through this difficult time you too will be heartened by his love for you and of life.
We knew Tom from the BC-Newton-Red House days, and we had such fun together. More recently, I had the great pleasure to join Tom with friends fishing the North Platte in Wyoming. As on that trip,
Peace to all,

Dear Hermes Family
Tom inspired us with his love of life and wonderful spirit. We promised him that we would deliver the research about wrecks in Lake Michigan for him to the historical society and we will do so.
We last saw Tom on a walk down Tower road...enjoying time with his wife and the beautiful outdoors.
He will be missed in the community.
We know he is cheering for Boston College from heaven. Our BC girls pass along their thoughts and prayers as well.
Love

Dear Barbara & family,
I'll never forget Tom's open, smiling face, and his big heart. I can't count how many times Tom and your family have run across the street to help my mom and dad (Florence & Vince Collins) handle crises big and small. Sometimes I'd see Tom and my dad standing on the street, shovels or rakes in hand, yakking about the world and the latest Private Rd. gossip. And bless his soul, Tom would patiently & genuinely listen to my dad's many stories. Then during my dad's tough last years, Tom was gifted at jollying him along and making him smile. Here's to Tom -- a generous, big-hearted soul whose smile will be missed but never forgotten.

I don't even no where to begin to express the sadness our family feels at the loss of Tom. Two thoughts that came to mind are the lasting memory Tom created for the Sacred Heart Graduating Class of 2001 with an incredible video montage of the year. Secondly as Tom was ill he still thought of others and referred clients to me during the last few years. God Bless you Barbara, Margaret, Madeline and Tommy at this most difficult time. We loved your husband and dad a lot, he was a great friend and a great man.

Tom,
I thought of you throughout yesterday's Autumn beauty. If you could have, sitting in the backyard feeling the sun on your face, enjoying the colors in the breeze. And probably walking along the lake, soaking it up and breathing it in....like all those mornings when you were in it, and taking the daily temp. And last night, the moon, the sky...you know.
I was glad and happy knowing how many times you enjoyed a day like yesterday without letting it go by unappreciated or unnoticed.
You soaked up a lot of those moments, and have inspired us to do the same.
