Thomas Marshall Obituary

Thomas Carpenter Marshall, 92, formerly of Chicago, Winnetka, and Lake Forest, passed away on March 10th following a brief illness.

He was born on December 16, 1930, to Thomas L. Marshall, former president of the Chicago Board of Education and senior partner at the law firm of Bell, Boyd, Marshall and Lloyd, and Elizabeth "Buffy" Marshall. He had a brother, the late John Marshall, a former nuclear physicist at the Argonne National Laboratory.

Educated at the Latin School of Chicago, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Yale University, Tom received his bachelor's degree in economics from Carleton College in Minnesota in 1952. Following graduation he was accepted into Officer Candidate School at the Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, where he qualified on aircraft carriers and flew Douglas AD Skyraiders as well as transport planes for the U.S. Marine Corps from bases in the Southeast and Japan.

In 1962 he married the former Barbara Farr Wilson and entered the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison. Over the course of his career he worked as an associate at the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis, the First National Bank of Chicago, and the Leo Burnett advertising agency, before transitioning into private practice as an investment advisor. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons Thomas Jr., David, and Stephen; and grandchildren Olivia, Bradley, and Davis.

An avid sailor and yachtsman, Tom served as a navigator in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit and captained his own yachts to many trophies as a member of the Chicago, Fish Creek (Wisconsin,) and Lake Forest Yacht Clubs. In 1970 his "Squall III" won second place in Division 1 of the Chicago-Mackinac Race, in a year marked by violent storms that forced other boats to abandon the race.

Tom was known for his sense of humor, avid interest in politics, and his love of espionage movies and fiction. He was remembered fondly on March 15th by his wife and sons at a private memorial service.

While I did not know Tom well, my late wife, Lucia, was a good friend of Barbara for many years. I was sorry to learn of Tom's death. The consolation must be that he lived a long and good life. Best Wishes, Herb Prochnow.
