Thomas McGrath Obituary

Thomas 'Tommy' Anthony McGrath age 60 of Chicago and Champaign, IL passed on Monday, August 9, 2021. A talented, skillful, and accomplished roofer, Tom was loved dearly by his family and community. He was known as the guy with the big soft heart, big smile, and a boisterous contagious laugh. He worked hard; some would say too hard. Tom loved music and sharing it with his children and siblings as a way to bond. He was known for singing loudly and off-key. He was a movie fanatic who was was extremely knowledgeable about movies. He knew all about directors, actors, and producers. He loved old westerns and gangster movies. He was the glue of our family who always encouraged a healthy and loving family relationship. He will be missed dearly. He is survived by his children Julia and Conor McGrath; "Pops" Donald W. Cranley; sisters Mary Downes and Julie Cranley; brothers Michael McGrath and Duke (Sarah) Cranley, nieces, nephews and friends who are too many to name. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary Ellen Moran Cranley and Tom "dago" (Caryl) McGrath, and his brother Joey McGrath. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Crescent Park (2200 W 108th Pl, Chicago, IL 60643) between 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM with a Celebration of Life picnic immediately following.

Tom was awesome! He had the sweetest soul and the biggest heart. He did our roof a couple of years ago and it was pouring rain, he called to ask if everything was alright. We told him that we had a leak. He came right over and got up on the roof and fixed it in the rain. He was a good man.

Mary, Mike, Julie and Duke, and Families,
I have known Tommy most of my life and I will always remember his big, beautiful smile and infectious laugh. All of you have been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard of Tom's passing and you will remain in my prayers. I know that losing a sibling is very difficult. So, hold on tight to each other and think about how much he loved you all and so many other people. May Tom Rest in Peace and until you meet again May God hold him in the palms of His hands

I worked with Tom on and off for most of my working life, But have known Tom my entire life. He was a good man with a kind heart. One of my fondest memories of Tom was on a warm summer day up on a roof with Tom and my dad. I was feeding Tom shingles and he was singing at the top of his lungs Escape (piña colada song). That moment in time has always stuck with me and always will.

Dear Mary and Michael and families,
Tommy was one in a million. So full of love. I haven´t hung out with him in years, but I´ll treasure our grade school fun. What a smile! It´s hard imagining the world without him in it. Please accept my love and care during this heartbreaking time.

Tommy was a great guy
I knew him since I was a little kid, I would race from one end of a roof to the other feeding him and my dad shingles back in the day when they were still hand nailing. He was like a family member to my family
Rest easy Homie
See you on the other side
