Father Tom prepared my late wife (Martha Jeanne Reilly) and I for Holy Matrimony and celebrated our 5 p.m. Wedding Mass on Friday November 23, 1973 at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Blue Island, Illinois.I will always treasure his kindness, patience, and reverence. He prepared Marti and I well for our 381/2 years of marriage and the blessings of five children and nine grandchildren until Martha was called by Our Lord at age 60 on May 11, 2012.Requiescat in pace, good priest of God. Love and prayers,

I had the privelege of providing health care to Fr. Purtell. He was one of many priests who truly was a good and faithful servant. Fr. Tom offered his services to minister to the many of my patients who faced their daily struggle with addiction. He was kind, generous with his time and a mentor for them.I am saddened by his death but know that the life he lived on his journey to the Lord was for the betterment of us who knew and loved him.Welcome home Father.

So sad to hear the news about Fr. Purtell. I remember how much he enjoyed talking with us kids at mass. I loved how he would start his sermons with a list of three things he was going to talk about. He was always so calm and peaceful. God bless his soul as he is now resting eternally with Him.

Even though we didn't see each other often, he always had a kind word for my mom and the rest of the Baumgartners. He was very special and his journey is over with. Rest in peace Tom

Father Purtell was everything you expected of a Priest and more. Nothing was too much trouble and he did everything with a smile.
He spoke through his actions and had a positive influence on everyone he met. Threats and fear were never a part of his life yet he managed to teach and espouse more good into the world than any other person I know.
Thank you God for bringing him to St. John Fisher, take great care of him now!

My deepest sympathies to the family of Fr. Purtell. He was so very kind and loving and humble. I went to him for confession for the first time in over 20 years. I was very nervous. He was so very nice to me that I left the confessional with a song in my heart and feeling 50 pounds lighter! Thank you Fr. Purtell. Goodbye until we meet in paradise!

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Fr. Purtell's family. Father Purtell was the nicest, most compassionate priest I know. He always had the time to be there if you needed him. He was the epitome of what a pastor should be. He taught me what it was to by a Catholic Christian and to respect and love others. Thank you Father, and may you rest in peace in the arms of our Heavenly Father for eternity.
