Tom Dundee Obituary

Tom Dundee, born Tom Callinan, 1946-2006, Tom's death April 18, was caused by injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near his Rogers Park home on Friday, April 14. Tom was an organ donor. Mr. Dundee was born in Chicago. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret, nee Kelly Callinan and his brother, John. A graduate of St. George High School, he attended DePaul University. Tom played a major part in the development of folk music's popularity. He was low-key and humorous in many of his songs and always in person and on stage. His songs included the visceral ''DELICATE BALANCE'' and ''THE WARM AND TENDER WALKING BY THE WATER''. Many of his songs such as the poigant ''McBRIDE-ARGYLE STATION'' and ''PLASTER AND WOOD'', showed his Chicago roots. Over the past several years, Tom had regularly hosted Sunday afternoon shows at Saloons on Lincoln Ave. that had been traditional folk music venues during the period of that music's chart leading appeal. He is survived by his long-time girlfriend and closest friend, Roni Perkins; many cousins including Jean Cooney, John McGee and Marlene, nee Slavin Fogarty. Burial has been held. A remembrance and celebration of Tom Dundee and his work will be held at The Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, Sunday, May 14, 5 p.m.

I met Tom in 1978 or 79, I forget. We were always friends, it seems like. When I moved to Seattle, he would make a point of getting in touch when he was out here. With Stephanie and I being part of the Orphan's crowd, we were lucky to be part of something special in a big city. True friends and neighbors. We will miss Tom.
