Vito Buffa Obituary

March 4, 1936 - May 4, 2018 It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our beloved Vito. Loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all that knew him. Vito worked tirelessly to provide his family with a wonderful life, for which we are eternally grateful. He loved his career of 30 years as a Chicago Fire Fighter and Lieutenant. He served the citizens of the City of Chicago proudly, and with great loyalty to all his brothers on the Chicago Fire Department. Dad, you were the life of every conversation. Your smile and laughter had us rolling on the floor long before you got the the punchline of your hilarious stories. You are our hero. Until we meet again, we will continue to do our best to make you proud.

Vito became a very special part of my life in 2015. I had the pleasure of helping his daughter Sue take care of him for several months. He still smiled despite all he was going through. His family would tell me heartwarming, intetesting and funny stories about him in his younger days. He was a brave firefighter, devoted father and genuine animal lover. Vito is someone I would have liked to know in his youthful years, but I am greatful to have met him nonetheless. He was a devoted man who gave so much to everyone around him. My husband and I send condolences to his family, especially Sue; his loving daughter that went above and beyond caring for her dad.

Vito, you are loved and will be missed!

Vito who was my first cousin was my inspiration to work hard on the job. He gave me the opportunity as a teenager to work in his restaurant business. Because I didn't drive, Vito would pick me up to go to work with him. From Chicago, we would travel to Brookfield, a suburb of Chicago about an hour or so drive with no highways.

Through Vito's restaurant business, I learned how important customer service is. Vito's business taught me the basics of customer service, marketing, and sales. Vito, thank you so much for taking me on in your business.

My condolences to Carol and his daughters. Vito worked hard for his family whom he loved very much.

Sincerely,
Frank Greco

My moment with Vito:

I think it was oktober 1997, Vito invited me and Cara for diner at the restaurant named the Como inn
I will never forget the moment that I arrived at the restaurant, It was if I walked into a perfect scene of a sicilian movie. Outside Vito was waiting for me in a long camelcolored coat with a toothpick in the corner of his mouth.
I was walking to him and I felt like I was meeting the Don

That night I had a wonderful diner with Vito, Carol and Cara, one to remember.
When I returned to Amsterdam I bought Vito a baseball cap with the word AMSTERDAM on it.
Few weeks later I met Vito at the carlot, he had proudly the cap on.
Vito, a man with humor, charisma and Italian style!

As I remember Vito, I recall the time a bunch of us (Vito, Carol, Sheri and I) piled into the family car one hot summer's evening and went to the Feast in Melrose Park . When we got there, Vito says to me, Chuck, let's get some clams. So we saunter off to a booth selling raw clams. Not wanting to appear like a novice, we wolfed down a dozen raw clams together! Not wanting to appear uncool, never having raw clams before, I choked and gagged my way through that. I think he knew, but famously pretended not to notice. I look back to that evening as one of the most fun of my life.

My memories of Vito are of his warmth and dedication to Family. Anyone who knew him felt it. I am so sorry to hear that he passed on, but I'm relieved to know he is no longer struggling with a body that would not cooperate. I have no doubt that he is in a better place, and his loved ones will one day see him again...Here's to you Vito

Vito it was a pleasure to know you. You were always kind to me no matter what the circumstances were. I will always remember the time I was around you, helping you with your 1936 Nash and getting to drive it. Being with you reminded me of being with my dad and grandfather. I wish I had more people in my life with your character! Now Rest In Peace.
