Dear Jeanette,
I just learned of Walt's death, and I am deeply saddened. He was a major factor in my coming to Rush and a supporter of my clinical activities and research. He was one of the few neurosurgeons I have ever met who did not have an"ego problem." He dealt fairly with his consultants and trained his residents to do the same. He genuinely cared for his patients and was not aloof to them. All Illinois physicians owe him a debt of gratitude for his seminal work with ISMIE. I considered him a good friend, held him in high esteem, and enjoyed the opportunities I had to see him after he and I had retired. He was a compassionate person, a distinguished investigator, and a friend I will sorely miss. Rush has lost a giant. I extend condolences to you and your daughters.
Warmest personal regards,
Michael Huckman
