David Dempsey Obituary

DAVID PRESCOTT DEMPSEY David Prescott Dempsey, born Feb. 20, 1955, at Enloe Hospital in Chico, CA, died Friday May 8 when he was struck by a vehicle while cycling on Highway 32. Dave attended school in Chico at Sierra View Elementary, Bidwell Jr. High and Pleasant Valley HS, from which he graduated in 1973. Dave had a strong sense of adventure from an early age, abetted by family camping and backpacking trips to the mountains and deserts of California and beyond. While completing his Bachelor of Science at UC Davis in Atmospheric Science and Mathematics, he managed to also enjoy a semester at the University of Rochester and a 5-month internship at Mercury at the Nevada Test Site. While working on his Ph.D. at the University of Washington (1985), he took a year off to travel extensively in New Zealand, Singapore, Nepal, Thailand, and Australia. Upon graduation, Dave accepted a 10-week fellowship to work with scientists in China, before beginning a Post-Doctoral fellowship at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO. Giving generously of himself to students and colleagues alike, Dave served as a highly respected professor of meteorology at San Francisco State University from 1989 until his retirement in June of 2018. In 1994 Dave married Rebecca Douglass, and the pair continued the active and adventurous outdoor life loved by both. When their sons were born in 1997 and 1999, Dave's greatest joy was introducing his children to reading, camping, hiking, and backpacking. Dave's passion for weather and the outdoors was matched by a passion for photography, and for sharing his experiences. In retirement, he enjoyed sharing detailed and well-researched photographic accounts of his travels, reviewed family history with his parents, and planned trips to every continent with his wife. Dave and Rebecca had recently returned safely from South America, where pandemic border closures unexpectedly extended their Antarctic cruise by seven days and 1500 miles. Dave is survived by his wife Rebecca Douglass, sons Kylan and Griffen Dempsey, parents Wesley and Phyllis Dempsey, brothers Tom (wife Carol), Jim, and Paul (Leslie), and nephews Ian, Tristan, and Duncan (Brittney) Dempsey. Donations may be made in Dave's memory to the Union of Concerned Scientists or the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. No memorial is planned at this time due to travel restrictions and the Corona virus.

So very very sorry for your loss. What an incredible person. This is very random, but David’s work maintaining jetstream models was extremely helpful keeping me safe on kitesurf outings. We are all the richer for his energy and enthusiasm.

My thought to you, Rebecca.

I would like to extend my condolences to Rebecca, her sons, and all of David's friends and family. I apologize for not being timely, I only just recently found out about David's passing. I am mortified. David was an amazing person and teacher, and I'm sure husband and father. His death must be devastating to all who knew him. I only knew him briefly when he joined the department at SFSU not long after I joined as Dept. Secretary. While I knew him briefly and somewhat formally, I admired him tremendously for his kindness and intelligence. I remember getting pictures of their first-born son from Rebecca with a letter telling me how happy she was having just moved to Daly City and buying a home together. Rebecca, I'm so sorry. If it is any consolation, my second husband died suddenly of an aorta aneurysm so I'm familiar with the tremendous shock you must have gone through and continue to deal with. I'm always there for you if you would like to reach out to me to talk. I wish you the very best.

I'm sorry to be adding this in January 2021, but I only recently learned of Dave's passing.

I was a colleague of Dave's. We shared the same advisor at the University of Washington (Cliff Mass), although Dave graduated before my arrival. I began to interact with him after I became a professor. He impressed me with his intellect and his dedication to students. We met frequently in Boulder at meetings for a program known as Unidata. I enjoyed talking with him about his adventure.

I share my deepest condolences. Dave touched many lives including mine.

I was a year or so behind Dave in graduate school at the University of Washington. Dave was very friendly, energetic, and passionate about his studies. I sent him a letter when he was in China following graduation and I remember him telling me that he was really enjoying his immersion in China, but that it was great to get a letter in English. I share with Dave a passion for being out in nature and for experiencing nature on a bicycle. I am sad for Dave's family and friends at this loss.

Knowing Wes, Dave's Father, from many explorations in Chico, I wish I had known Dave. As a traveler who loves to explore the world and the outdoors, I would have enjoyed hearing the stories and perhaps joining in. I am so sorry he had but 2 years in retirement, though it sounds like he made good use of that time. Coming from the Dempsey family, I can only imagine what a terrific contribution he made to the world. Thank you for that, Dave. You mattered and made a difference.

The picture in my memory of Dave is always on some high mountaintop, smiling and photographing, with enthusiasm and joy in every moment. He will be missed by many.
