Not sure what to say?

So very very sorry for your loss. What an incredible person. This is very random, but David’s work maintaining jetstream models was extremely helpful keeping me safe on kitesurf outings. We are all the richer for his energy and enthusiasm.

My thought to you, Rebecca.

I would like to extend my condolences to Rebecca, her sons, and all of David's friends and family. I apologize for not being timely, I only just recently found out about David's passing. I am mortified. David was an amazing person and teacher, and I'm sure husband and father. His death must be devastating to all who knew him. I only knew him briefly when he joined the department at SFSU not long after I joined as Dept. Secretary. While I knew him briefly and somewhat formally, I admired...

I'm sorry to be adding this in January 2021, but I only recently learned of Dave's passing.

I was a colleague of Dave's. We shared the same advisor at the University of Washington (Cliff Mass), although Dave graduated before my arrival. I began to interact with him after I became a professor. He impressed me with his intellect and his dedication to students. We met frequently in Boulder at meetings for a program known as Unidata. I enjoyed talking with him about his...

I was a year or so behind Dave in graduate school at the University of Washington. Dave was very friendly, energetic, and passionate about his studies. I sent him a letter when he was in China following graduation and I remember him telling me that he was really enjoying his immersion in China, but that it was great to get a letter in English. I share with Dave a passion for being out in nature and for experiencing nature on a bicycle. I am sad for Dave's family and friends at this loss.

My heart goes out to all the many loved ones in Dave's family.

Knowing Wes, Dave's Father, from many explorations in Chico, I wish I had known Dave. As a traveler who loves to explore the world and the outdoors, I would have enjoyed hearing the stories and perhaps joining in. I am so sorry he had but 2 years in retirement, though it sounds like he made good use of that time. Coming from the Dempsey family, I can only imagine what a terrific contribution he made to the world. Thank you for that, Dave. You mattered and made a difference.

Did not know Dave, but knew his dad and when I read his obit in the Chico ER I wish I had. Need more people in our world like this.

The picture in my memory of Dave is always on some high mountaintop, smiling and photographing, with enthusiasm and joy in every moment. He will be missed by many.
