I only spent a few months in Bethel, but Derrick greeted me with open and kind arms and taught me to fly the sled. I moved on to bigger but not better airplanes and I speak frequently to my co workers about my time in AK and last week I was chatting with one of my first officers who had spent time in Bethel. I told him that Cedars had taught me to fly the sled and he then informed me of Derricks passing. I'm way late to the table but my condolences to his family and the YKDelta community. Derrick was what I always envisioned I would be and I never quite got there. Rest peacefully my friend.

Derrick,
I still can't believe you're gone. Though our paths crossed and went our separate ways, you never treated me any different. I'll always remember you for your love for the skies and those damn cigars. :) Hope the skies in paradise love your pilot wings!

Derrick:
Now coming on a year since your passing, it's still hard to believe you're on to the next stage in life. One we will all eventually follow. I miss you buddy. You always made yourself available to consult me on my many big decisions in life and while I was appreciative, now putting it into more perspective, I feel very fortunate to have borrowed some of your time. You were a confidant and good friend. You were easy to have fun with...camping, hiking, flying, shooting, partying, and etc.
Growing up in our 20's and 30's in Alaska was a lot of fun with you, and I have countless memories of our friendship. I take a your spirit with me daily when I fly.
Thank you for being a part of my life.

Derrick,
You were the first captain I flew with when I went down to bethel as a 208 copilot. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I preflighted 42y and we went out to good ole Nelson Island, you impressed me from the get go. I was highly impressed with your knowledge of the ykdelta, aviation in general, the 208, basically everything. Your flying skill was beyond amazing. You taught me a lot for the few years that I knew you. Always welcoming me down to bethel as I was stationed elsewhere. In fact the day you left, you told me I was welcomed down here anytime. The last thing you said was 'don't forget your gloves' with a big smile on your face. Backstory is Derrick was my safety pilot for the caravan, and I kept forgetting my gloves back at base. You are definitely missed by everyone. I think about you everyday man.

Derrick,
I now realize how much I took you for granted. I always assumed we would be old together and have many opportunities to look back on our great adventure in awe. I think about you on a daily basis now, some days only for a moment, other days for hours. Thank you for allowing me to share the path with you for the last fifteen years. My life received great benefit, expansion, knowledge, and improvement from knowing you. Your impression within me will never fade. My words will never be enough to explain the reverence I hold for you.
You were a good friend,
give a handshake with a look in,
to my eye.
"We'll get to it later." Our motto for all the unwanted projects we found ourselves in together, right? LOL
Later it is then, my Friend!

Derrick, I am so sorry to get this news, found it on accident on the web, ironacaly listening to Mazzy Star at the same time (one of your favorites). I think of you often, and our great times in the prime of our youth in Chico. "Songs from the Cold Garage" will live on forever Bro! I can't wait for our intellectual discussion on life again some day....We will meet again, don't worry. I learned so much from you, and thank you for our time and laughs while your were here on earth. You are missed terribly, my friend.

We miss you and love you. You were such a wonderful father. Sending you hugs and kisses.

My good friend Derrick,
You made such a difference in my life!! You came into my life when I placed an ad for a roommate. You answered that ad and what a fabulous find for me. Every time you made food in our kitchen my house filled with the smells of my grandmother's cooking. You were a focused, patient, kind, and dead serious aviation student. You achieved this with high honor and became the best pilot ERA/RVN had to offer. So many people have benefited by knowing you, relying on your expertise and your kind and generous nature.
You were a friend to me in a dire time of need. When I was at my lowest, you returned into my life and lifted me up. You stood by me when I really needed a friend. Every time you came through Anchorage, you made sure to check in until you told me one day you had met the love of your life and wanted to start a family! This was about the time when you were getting promoted and your life filled to the brim in the community of Bethel. I hope one day to meet your family, my thoughts and prayers go out to them. I will never forget you Derrick!!!!

Derrick was such such a great guy. He and his family were so kind and generous to me. I was always looking forward to catching up with Derrick, and I'm heartbroken that I won't get the chance. I'm so glad to see that he had such a great life and family in Alaska.

Cedars, thank you for flying the delta for many many years. Your devotion to our people touched many in the YKDelta. Thank you even more for befriending my husband Robert winkelman, who was also on your shift and you were his lead pilot. A very good one indeed! We will miss your friendship and your huge get togethers at your home. You welcomed everyone and gave so unselfishly. May you rest in peace at God's speed.

Derrick, you impacted my life in so many ways during my formative years. I remember well the day I saw you with your car packed full of provisions. I asked where you were going. You said Alaska. I saw you two more times after that. It was like you never left both times. You will be missed, yet always remembered my friend.

Derrick and I worked together in the summer of 2000 at the UAA Grounds Department. He took me flying several times and proved to be an excellent flight instructor as well as a pilot. I lost track of him around 2004 and have been looking for and trying to reconnect with him for the past few years as an FAA Air Traffic Controller stationed here in Alaska. It is with great sadness that I finally found him...through an NTSB report and an obituary.
He was a wonderful human being and he will be deeply, deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Rest in peace, Buddy. Wish our paths could have crossed sooner.
