JACK HAROLD GAINES Jack passed away early morning on May 15, 2018. Born in Seminole, Oklahoma in 1929, Jack grew up in a large extended family with much of his boyhood guidance coming from his treasured grandparents, 'Mama' and 'Papa'. In addition to his own parents, Mama and Papa would become the people Jack credited most with the stability, love, and faith that shaped the rest of his life. Like many Oklahomans during the depression, Jack's family came to California where Jack attended school, graduating from Alameda High in the San Francisco Bay Area. While in school, he met the love of his life - Marjorie, whom he would later wed after high school. After graduation, Jack entertained the life of a musician, playing trumpet in various clubs and dance bands. But, Uncle Sam called him to Army service in the Korean War. After a quick honeymoon with Margie, Jack was on his way overseas. His good fortune allowed him to continue his trumpet playing as a military bandsman for the duration of his service. He was always thankful for that opportunity. Upon discharge he went to work for Signal Oil Co., where he would eventually work his way up to Marketing with Chevron Oil for 35+ years, a career he much enjoyed. Jack and Margie had 3 daughters, Nancy, Sally, and Jennifer. They lived in several communities throughout California as Chevron frequently transferred Jack. It was always a positive adventure moving the family. Jack and Margie spent many happy years together active in church, community, and family life. They became expert landscapers with each new home acquired. Traveling in the U.S. became Jack and Margie's favorite hobby after retiring from Chevron. Jack played his trumpet often in many kinds of groups and settings; marching band, concert band, large and small jazz groups, brass ensembles, church, and the occasional 'taps'. His love and affection for people will be remembered by all who knew him. He was kind and caring, funny and gentlemanly, encouraging and helpful - always looking toward the positive. With a strong faith in God, he knew that things would always work out. After losing Margie in 2013, he was especially delighted to have spent time with grandchildren: Lauren and Reid in Texas, and Rose, Sara, David, Nathan, and Katie in Chico. Even though he has 'flown away to heaven', he will be dearly missed! Graveside service with Military Honors for Jack will be Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 11 00 am, Liberty Hill Cemetery, Liberty Hill, TX. Beck Funeral Home. Special thanks to the caring staff of Sycamore Glen, Amber Grove Place, Feather River Hospice, and Enloe Hospital. Online condolences may be made to the family at
