Janet Simpson Obituary

JANET L. SIMPSON Jan Simpson (nee Scovil) of Chico Ca., passed away peacefully in her home on June 5th after an eight-year battle with cancer. She was 80 years old. Jan was born April 1, 1937 in Escondido, CA to George and Adele Scovil. Following high school she attended San Diego State University and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. After graduation in 1959 she moved to Salt Lake City working as a nurse at the University Hospital and learning to ski. In Salt Lake City, she met Dr. Sutherland "Sim" Simpson, a resident at the Univ. of Utah. They were married June 28, 1961. Following this they moved to Harlingen, TX where Sim was assigned as a surgeon in the Air Force. While there she continued her nursing at the regional hospital. It was after their transfer to San Angelo, TX that Debbie was born. They returned to Salt Lake City in 1963 to continue studies at the University where Mike was born. After three years a final move was to Chico in 1966 and Gordy was born a year later. It was here in 1972 that Jan was initiated into PEO and until recently stayed highly involved in her local chapter. She and Sim enjoyed traveling, especially sailing the waters of numerous countries around the world. In addition to her sailing, Jan continued skiing with numerous weeks of Heli-skiing. She enjoyed scuba diving and took several trips to the South Pacific. Ultimately an unfortunate biking accident in 2003 left her partially paralyzed. Despite this set back, she maintained her positive, upbeat outlook on life and continued her adventurous spirit. When at home she took comfort and pride in her beautiful garden, caring for her family, donkeys and dogs. Her home away from home was the family cabin at Lake Almanor, where she continued to create special memories with family and friends. Jan is survived by her husband of 56 years, Sutherland "Sim" Simpson; her three children and their spouses Debbie and David White of Bend, OR; Mike and Pam Simpson of San Luis Obispo, CA; Gordy and Jennifer Simpson of Ventura CA; her four grandchildren- Taylor White of Bend, Carter Simpson of San Luis Obispo, Danika and Ryan Simpson of Ventura; her sister, Marion Eggertsen; and her brother, Owen Scovil, as well as many nieces and nephews. Throughout her life she remained active in her church, Bidwell Presbyterian Church, where she served many years as a deacon, elder, secretary, and as a Stephens Minister. Jan will be remembered for her kindness and caring for others. Comforted by the outpouring of love and support from her friends and family, she maintained a very positive outlook on life. Jan has touched many lives with her faith and beautiful spirit. A memorial service for Jan will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Bidwell Presbyterian Church, 208 W. 1st Street, Chico. All friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Program for Continuing Education (PCE) fund of PEO, or the North Valley Health Education Foundation through Bruise Funeral Home, 626 Broadway, Chico, CA Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.BrusieFH.com

Although I am remiss in sending my heartfelt condolences in a timely manor, my cousin in law Thea Mink just made me aware of Jan's passing. Jan was very welcoming to me on the few occasions I spent with your family. She was very generous with her time and with her beautiful spirit. Catie Norcross

Jan a woman of substance

June 17, 2017

Bob and I were so sorry to read about the passing of Jan Simpson. It has been years since we saw Jan but our memories of her are still happy ones. We only saw Jan on happy occasions that were celebrated with Dr. Simpson and his office staff, but they were always great times.
Bob and I moved away from Chico many years ago, and were very sad to see this obituary, but Jan will never be forgotten by us.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise found in 1 Thessalonians 4 : 14 can bring some comfort. Knowing that there is a future for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
