Joseph Ely Obituary

Graveside services will be held for Joseph B. Ely, 94, of Chico, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 at Glen Oaks Memorial Park. He died Monday March 20, 2006 in Chico. Joe was born May 22, 1911 in Chicago, Ill. to Charlotte and Joseph Ely.

He graduated from Dartmouth College and Yale Forestry School. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 36 years and subsequently taught at Cal State University, Chico. He developed and operated the first squad of aerial fire control tankers in Willows, Calif. in 1956, and his achievements are recorded in the aeronautical portion of the Smithsonian Institute. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters.

Joe is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Britton Anderson of El Cerrito, Calif. and Brenda A. Albus of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons, Franklin J. Ely of Etna, Calif. and Guerdon T. Ely of Chico; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His wife, Katherine, predeceased him in 1997.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Joe Ely Memorial Fund for the relocation and maintenance of the 25th Anniversary Air Tanker Plaque and Monument located at the Willows Airport in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home or sent directly to Glenn County Department of Finance, 516 W.
