Steve Rivas Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Professor Steve M. Rivas shares his passing. Steve was born on July 4, 1941 to Esteban and Stella Rivas in San Antonio, Texas. He moved to Los Angeles, Calif. in 1957 to pursue his goal of becoming a teacher. He met Margaret Gaglio in 1959 and they married two years later. He was a devoted husband and loving father to his five children. Steve's great love for his family was apparent to all who knew him. Steve received a B.A. and M.A. from CSU, Los Angeles and a Ph.D in Hispanic Literature from the University of Southern California. Although he began his teaching career in the Beverly Hills School District in 1963, his ultimate goal was to teach at the university level. Steve taught at CSU, Los Angeles preparing the original group of Peace Corps volunteers by teaching intensive Spanish language classes. He taught at CSU, Northridge prior to accepting a teaching position at CSU, Chico. Steve was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship to study at Stanford and a Fullbright fellowship to study in Spain. Steve traveled extensively and loved to share his cultural experiences with his students. Steve and his family moved to Chico in 1968, where he was a Professor of Spanish language and literatures for the Modern Language Dept. at CSU, Chico for 41 years and was also Chair of his department for 8 years. He worked to create the International Festival at Chico State, which became an annual event, as well as the 3rd Street Language Houses, which provided students with a language immersion experience. Several of his favorite activities were organizing language and cultural study trips to Mexico, and he also taught Spanish-language immersion classes at Eagle Lake for many summers. Steve also enjoyed teaching a variety of Spanish classes for Butte College. He loved teaching! A few of the classes he taught were Spanish Conversation, Medical Spanish, Spanish for Peace Officers, etc. Teaching community members was a very special experience for him. He met and taught so many wonderful people and was rewarded by their lasting friendships. Professor Rivas thoroughly enjoyed teaching and touched the lives of thousands of students over his more than four-decade long career. Many of his students went on to become language teachers themselves. He also enjoyed traveling, planting trees and flowers, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his family. He died in his home with family Monday morning after a three and a half year struggle with cancer. He was 63 years old. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his sister, Florinda (Nina) Rivas of Chico and his five children: Anita G. Rivas, JDS of Los Angeles, Steven G. Rivas, DDS of Saint Helena, Monica G. Rivas, Ph.D of Santa Clara, Rick G. Rivas, MA of Los Gatos, and Raquel G. Rivas, of Los Angeles. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Christian and Sofia. Consumed with hope, contagiously optimistic, and above all else generous with love, Steve Rivas will be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and the thousands of people he taught. Donations can be made to the International Myeloma Foundation. A memorial mass will be held for Steve on Friday, August 20th at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico.

Sitting here in Sayulita Mexico I was just recounting our adventure in one of Steve´s (and Anita´s) intercession cultural trips to Mexico. It was the day after Christmas 1982 that we all met in TJ. Our travels included Mazatlan, Guadalajara and Manzanillo. All on a $100.00 for three weeks. It has been a life long memory. Steve went on to be my favorite professors and mentors. He was kind enough to write me a letter of reference for law school and his teachings have served me well in that profession with 90% of my clients being Mexican. I wish I could tell him of how much he affected my life. I think he would have been proud. Rest easy Steve. And thank you for everything.

Hola Rivas Familia,

I am honored to have had the opportunity to know Steve Rivas and his family. I believe that we cross each other's path for a reason. For me, Steve was an example of compassion and acceptance combined with a strong ethical stance, that I strive to emulate.

Steve was such an incrediable man who gave so much of himself to all. He was a great role model who lead by example. Gracias to the familia for sharing him with all of us.

This is not adios, but until our paths cross again.

To the Family of Dr. Steve Rivas:

I have no way to tell you how much Dr. Rivas has meant to me over the years. I consider him to be my mentor since my early days in college and in the language laboratory with Fred Aust, and I have been proud to consider him my friend for thirteen years. I know how much he valued and loved you, as he spoke of his family as the prize above all in his life. Please know how much you meant to him, and although we never had the opportunity to meet, I will always hold you in my heart. Dr. Rivas encouraged me professionally to go beyond my expectations of myself and to dig in and fight for what I believed. I thank God for his presence in my life and will miss him terribly. Que Dios los bendiga!

Dear Marge and Family,

Words are so hard to come by when we think about my beautiful cousin who we loved so much and those wonderful hour long telephone calls we got when he would share with us how much he loved his Lord. When we think of your partner, father and brother we will always remember him sitting by the running water in his creek that he enjoyed and the psalm he loved so much, “The Lord is my Sheppard”. We will also remember him by his great love of his family and his concern and dedication to each one of you. We want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Marge and family: I had classes with Steve on my journey to become a teacher. It was a foreign language requirement for an MA in English. Steve loved to share stories about his family and their accomplishments. He brought such enthusiasm to the classroom. You knew he really wanted to be there. We learned a lot from him about Hispanic culture and San Antonio, Texas. I couldn't have had a better Spanish teacher! My best wishes, Catherine Beeghly

I have fond memories of Professor Rivas as he was my advisor in the foreign languages department at Chico State. With his support, I went on to become a high school Spanish teacher. Professor Rivas was a wonderful teacher and a genuine person. May God bless and comfort the Rivas family during this difficult time.
