Charles Smack Obituary

Charles Hayward Smack, Sr., 85, of 137 Amstar Drive, Chippewa Falls, died Friday, March 9, 2007 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Chippewa Falls.

He was born Feb. 19, 1922 in Snowhill, Maryland, the son of Mary (Hayward) and James Smack. He grew up on the family farm just outside of Snowhill and graduated from high school there. Charles joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in October 1940 and served until his honorable discharge in October 1945.

He married Lois Dawson on August 1, 1942 in Sebring, Florida. They resided in Chippewa Falls during their marriage. Charles and Lois had four children together. His wife, Lois, their son, Charles Jr, and daughter-in-law, Eileen, preceded him in death on September 14, 1991.

Charles was employed at Presto for many years, then worked as a machinist at W.S. Darley in Chippewa Falls from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. He also worked part-time at Irvine Park from 1965-1975.

He married Myra Jaquith Gatten on May 13, 1998 in Stillwater, Minn. They have resided in Chippewa Falls since.

He was an active member of Central Lutheran Church in Chippewa Falls, volunteering his time cooking at special events and being a youth leader. For many years, he was also a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 15.

Survivors include his wife, Myra of Chippewa Falls; a daughter, Darlene (Larry) Larson of Iron Mountain, Mich.; two sons, Darwin (Deb) Smack of Chippewa Falls, Dan (Sheila) Smack of Tecumseh, NE; two grandchildren, Cindy (Adam Llewellyn) of St. Louis, Mo., Brian (Judy) of Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Quick, Reagan and Jake Larson; a brother, Roger Smack of Snowhill, Md.; a brother-in-law, Charles Nock of Pocomoke, Md.; two stepdaughters, Karen (Bill) Lea of Chippewa Falls, Joan (Vern) Schneider of Helena, Mont.; a stepson-in-law, Dick Wohlbier of Chippewa Falls; seven step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lucille Nock, Hazel Hudson; and a stepdaughter, Judy Wohlbier.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12 at Central Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls with the Rev. Rick Hoyme officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Memorials in Charles' name may be designated to Central Lutheran Church.
