Ethelyn L. Martin, 78, of the Chippewa Manor Nursing Home, 222 Chapman Rd., Chippewa Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
She was born Nov. 6, 1925, in New Auburn to Bertha (Gehring) and Charles Gravunder. She graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1942 from New Auburn High School.
Ethelyn married Lyle Tompkins Sr. on April 17, 1945, in Chippewa Falls. He preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 1974.
She married Leonard Martin on Jan. 6, 1979, in Chippewa Falls.
She enjoyed Women's Bible Study at Chippewa Valley Bible Church in Chippewa Falls. Although she never attended college, she made sure all of her children graduated from college. Her stroke in 1991 didn't deter her from adventures in life, including whitewater rafting, helicopter rides, attending grandchildren's concerts and weddings, and attending the Super Bowl.
Survivors include: her husband, Leonard of Chippewa Falls; two daughters, Helen (Daniel) Dziuba of Portland, Ore., Kathleen Brunstad of Eau Claire; two sons, Lyle Tompkins Jr. of Chippewa Falls and Keith (Terri) Tompkins of Eau Claire; a brother, Delmar Gravunder of New Auburn; 13 grandchildren, Karen, Mike and Jill Brunstad, Michelle Allard, Tracey Rancourt, Kim Boyajean, Mike Tompkins, Jamie Dow, Peter and Helen Claire Dziuba, Tara Burr, Tony and Lauren Tompkins; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her first husband; her parents; a brother, Norman Gravunder; and a son-in-law, Larry Brunstad.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Chippewa Valley Bible Church in Chippewa Falls, with Pastor Jim Woldhuis officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, village of Lake Hallie.
Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
Memorials in Ethelyn's name may be directed to Stroke Support Group at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire, or to the music ministry at Chippewa Valley Bible Church.
