Patrick S. Mullally

Patrick S. Mullally, age 22, of Hayward, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 at his home.

Patrick Steven Mullally was born on Sept. 29, 1991 in Duluth, Minn., the son of Conn and Kathleen (Barnaby) Mullally. He was raised in Hayward. Throughout his life, he and his younger brother and best friend, Jonathan, were inseparable.

Patrick began playing hockey at age 5. He participated in several Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association State Tournaments. In middle school, Patrick's love of running took off, as a participant on the first middle school cross country team. In high school, Patrick was active in cross country, wrestling, track and hockey. He was the team captain of his cross country, wrestling and track teams. Patrick received numerous awards including All-Conference, 3 Sport Athlete, Mr. Track (for excellence), Good Sportsmanship, True Grit and many more. Patrick was known to be a team player, reliable, hardworking and able to put others first. He was committed to being physically fit and was often found in the high school work-out room weight lifting before 6 a.m. This passion continued beyond high school to present day.

Patrick graduated from Hayward High School in May 2010 and continued his education at the University of Wisconsin–Superior. He competed on both the UWS Yellowjackets track and cross country teams. In the summer after his freshman year, Patrick joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard and completed basic training as a member of Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga. on Sept. 15, 2011. Upon graduation he became a member of the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Battalion, 128th Infantry, Company B in Menomonie.

During his service he excelled in marksmanship and physical fitness (PT), with ongoing high PT scores including 352. In August 2012, Patrick completed Level 2 Combatives. He received a Certificate of Appreciation in August 2013 for positive attitude, dedication and uncompromising work ethic. Patrick received a Battalion Coin for Excellence in Leadership June 2014. In August 2014, he was very proud to be promoted to an E5. Patrick transferred in his sophomore year of college to the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire to enter the ROTC Program with continued coursework at Chippewa Valley Technical College before returning to Hayward.

Patrick enjoyed many activities with his family and friends including hunting, fishing, camping, four-wheeling, golfing and playing video games. He will be remembered for his big and fiercely loyal heart, his willingness to help others and being a stubborn proud Irishman. Patrick is much loved.

Patrick is survived by his parents, Conn and Kathy Mullally of Hayward; two brothers, Aaron Mullally of Bowling Green, Ky. and Jonathan Mullally of Eau Claire; grandparents, Larry and Nancy Barnaby, Helen and Norman Ruby, and Karen Mullally, all of Hayward; aunts, uncles and cousins: Laurie Bernier (Jake, Rachel) of Hayward, Jerry and Kris Barnaby (Noah, Seth) of Eden Prairie, Minn., Steven Barnaby and Diana Gorski (Haze, Bryn) of Hayward.

He was preceded by his paternal grandfather, John Mullally.

A memorial service will be held for Patrick at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Hayward Wesleyan Church, with Pastor Mark Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the State of Wisconsin, Department of Veterans Affairs, Military Funeral Honors Program.
