Richard James Alseth
Richard James Alseth died peacefully early Wednesday morning, July 31, 2024 at the age of 87 years.
Richard was born on September 9, 1936 in Menomonie, WI. He was the second of two sons born to Arthur and Gertrude (nee Anderson) Alseth. Richard graduated from Menomonie High School in 1954. After meeting in middle school and dating for eight years, Richard married Barbara Melloh on May 29, 1958 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Highland Park, MI. They shared 57 years together, keeping true to their vow 'til death do us part' until Barbara died June 7, 2015.
Richard attended GMI (General Motors Institute) earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. He used this degree while employed by GM as an engineer until his retirement on March 1, 1987. Richard also received the Graduate Key Award from GMI on July 26, 1968. When retirement began, Barbara and Richard enjoyed four winters on south Florida's gulf coast. With the need to be busy and engaged, Richard became a realtor. He sold commercial and residential properties for eight years before retiring a final time.
Richard was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and spent many hours learning and discovering the genealogy of his family. The highlight of this endeavor was traveling to Norway, meeting relatives and then in turn, hosting them in the USA. Richard enjoyed golfing and had the experience of sinking a 'hole in one' on July 7, 2003 at Bello Woods Golf Course. He was also passionate about vintage automobiles and restored a 1930 Essex, 1930 Chevrolet and 1952 MG TD. Richard's favorite pastime was Happy Hour, especially with friends and family on the terrace of his home. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and perhaps most importantly, a kind and gentle human being. He will always be remembered for his generosity, integrity, honesty, kindness and respect for everyone around him. He was an inspiration to all and will be greatly missed.
Richard is survived by his son, Timothy Alseth; grandson, Ronald Woolsey along with Daniel Cracchiola.
Richard was predeceased by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Karen Ann Alseth; brother, John Alseth and parents, Arthur and Gertrude Alseth.
A private graveside service will take place at Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Township, MI.
Memorial tributes would be appreciated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Leader Dogs for the Blind.

I work as a server and got to know Richard well at American House GP over the course of one year from July 2023-July 2024. He was a very nice and kind man, and I miss seeing him at the dining hall very much, and his table misses him too and we still talk about him. Richard was legally blind and on hospice but he still maintained a kind and positive outlook, and always was one to tell good jokes and make everyone laugh. He will be sorely missed but remembered as optimistic and upbeat in his attitude towards life, and he was a good, fine person. I will miss him, but always will remember him.
I am sorry for the great loss that Tim and the rest of Richard's Family are going through, and I hope they take comfort in knowing that Richard, even in the last 12 months of life, was still making people happy, had a positive attitude, and changed a lot of lives for the better.
I always looked forward to seeing him at the dining hall, and again, we all miss him very much.
-From Dan, Server at American House GP, who knew Richard well.
