Debra Waff Obituary

Debra Sue Waff
EDENTON - Debra Sue Waff passed peacefully in the care of her family October 7, 2025 after an inspiring and courageous 19-year battle with breast cancer.
Born on May 22, 1951, Debra was preceded in death by her loving parents, Paul "Edsel" Waff Sr. and Sarah Hollowell Waff, and her cherished brother, Paul Edsel Waff Jr. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Jonna Gurganus, Paul Gurganus, and Mary Catherine Gurganus Saunders (Sam); and her beloved grandchildren: Gabe St. Pierre-Gurganus, Hope Rahilly, Olivia St. Pierre-Gurganus, Jackson Saunders, Hunter St. Pierre-Gurganus, Brooklyn Saunders, and Mila Saunders.
Debra spent the early years of her career as a passionate preschool teacher, delighting in story times and messy, joy-filled art projects that touched the lives of countless children. She brought that same joy and creativity to the Martin County Memorial Library, where she worked in the children's program. Later, Debra returned to her hometown and used her artistic vision and passion for photography to assist the family business, Waff Contracting Inc.
In adulthood, Debra followed a long-held dream and earned a degree in photography from Randolph Community College. Her love for capturing the beauty of God's creation, from the glow of a sunset casting golden light on the clouds to the fine specks of color on a butterfly's wings, was evident in every photograph and painting she made. Her artistic talents were not only a personal passion but a gift she shared with her children and grandchildren. Much of her family's life was beautifully documented through her lens.
Debra was also a lifelong advocate for mental health awareness and the importance of self-care and professional support. She believed deeply in the healing power of creativity, nature, and reflection. She lived that belief through the way she supported others, with compassion, empathy, and honesty.
She was happiest surrounded by nature, coffee cup in hand, or in her art studio with music filling the air as she sketched and painted. Through her creativity and quiet strength, she shaped and preserved her family's most treasured memories.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Heather White, whose unwavering compassion and determination brought strength and hope throughout Debra's journey. A special thanks goes to Heather Henderson, RN, and her Gentiva of Kinston team for their tender hospice care, support for Debra, and guidance to the family as Debra transitioned peacefully to her eternal home, reunited with those who went before her.
A service was held on Saturday, October 11th, at 1:00 pm at the Waff family graveyard located at 1804 West Queen Street B, Edenton, NC 27932, followed by a floating reception to celebrate Debra's life from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Waff family home, located at 323 Hickory Fork Road, Edenton, NC 27932.
In place of flowers, donations may be made in Debra's memory to the Hope Lodge of Greenville (American Cancer Society), a place of respite that provided her with comfort, dignity, and support throughout much of her cancer journey.
Debra Sue Waff will be remembered for her free spirit and artistic soul. Her legacy of beauty, strength, and love will continue to inspire all who had the blessing of knowing her.
