WILLIAM OBEN Obituary

WILLIAM M. OBEN William M. Oben, lovingly known as "Bill," passed away peacefully at his home in Keuka Park, N.Y., on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. He was born in Highland Park, Michigan on July 5, 1943, the son of the late Howard C. and Mabel L. Oben. Corning, N.Y., became home for much of his childhood in which he shared many fond memories. Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife, friend and companion, Beverly J. Oben, on October 20, 2021. He is survived by his three children: Keith (Beth) Woodward, Kelly (Don) Roberts and Carrie (Steve) Moulton; his eight cherished grandchildren: Jake, Brady, Casey, and Kylie Woodward; Kyle and Ella Roberts; and Maggie and Charlotte Moulton; his sister Kate Bowker; niece Julia (David) Ekelund; and grandnephews Davey and Henry. Graduating from Purdue University and a mechanical engineer by profession, Bill spent much of his career at Eastman Kodak before retiring to embrace life with passion and purpose. He served as president and member of Keuka Lake Association for many years and was deeply committed to preserving the history and culture of the Finger Lakes region. A skilled craftsman and historian, Bill authored numerous articles and books exploring the history, restoration, and craftsmanship of wooden boats in the Finger Lakes. His dedication to this work extended to co-founding the Finger Lakes Boating Museum. Bill had a zest for life that was evident in his love of wine, food, antiques, his cats, and storytelling. He was known not only for sharing stories of hobbies and life, but also for his genuine interest in hearing the stories of others. His warmth and curiosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him. In honor of Bill's memory, his family encourages everyone to celebrate life by sharing a meal with loved ones. Splurge on an appetizer, a good bottle of wine, a delicious entrée, and dessert. Take time to connect with your waitstaff and tip generously - just as Bill would have done. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his legacy of kindness and curiosity continue to inspire us all. A private Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the near future. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Townsend-Wood & Zinger Funeral Home, Penn Yan, N.Y. To leave the family a memory or a message of condolence, please visit www.townsendwoodzinger.com.

I first met Bill when I became a member of the FLBM, not long after it was established. Bill was always so eager to share his skills and knowledge of boat building in general, and trout boats in particular.
A cherished memory was the day Ed Wightman and I visited Bill in his shop as he was working on a trout boat.
I cherish his books and they travel aboard the Pat2 when I Captain for handy reference to passengers questions.
My sympathies and best wishes to his family and friends, we have lost an important person in Finger Lakes boating history.
