Send FlowersDoris "Jean" Harrold, 99 of Fairmount, was healed of her physical pain on Sunday, October 26, 2025 at Colonial Oaks Health Care where she had resided for the last several years.
Jean was born on November 5, 1925 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, daughter of the late Ralph E. and Catherine E. (McDonald) Reader. Jean graduated from Central Catholic High School and enrolled in a fast track nursing program in Fort Wayne where she became a registered nurse. Working over 50 years and well into her 70's, her career took her to Marion General Hospital, the Marion Veterans Administration, Bradner Village, Dr Grant's office and Dana Corporation. She started the Madison-Grant School Nurse Program and served at all the grade schools along with the Jr. High and High School. Jean was very proud of her service as a Nurse Cadet during WWII. Jean was 25 when she moved to Fairmount and married Hubert J. Harrold on November 24, 1951. Hubert preceded her in death on January 26, 2001. After the death of Hubert she was the sweetheart of George Siegel for 10 years before his death.
Jean was a tough lady who knew what it was like to live with daily pain. At the age of three she was hit by a car causing severe damage to her leg that lasted a lifetime. She didn't let it slow her down. She was a farm wife, mother of 2, and a hardworking nurse, with a positive outlook, and an inspiration and encouragement to many. At the age of 90 she received her first passport and made three trips to Guatemala.
Jean, affectionately known as Grandma Nean, was a wonderful cook who lovingly prepared many family meals over the years. Her specialties were meatloaf, chicken and noodles, vegetable soup, rice crispy critters, cherry pie, and pecan pie. Jean was a super fan of all of her grandchildren and never missed a game or match.
Jean was a 25 year member Phi Beta Psi and a long time member of Fairmount Friends Church. She was a Notre Dame fan, loved to read and play bridge. Her crossword puzzles were always done in ink.
Jean will be missed by her sons, Doug (Mary) Harrold, Fairmount, and Jeff Harrold, Marion; grandchildren, Doug (Holly) Harrold, Summitville and their children Maya, Cooper, Sarahn and Wilson; Zachary (Annette) Harrold, Noblesville and their children Caden, Annie, and Anneliese, Daniel (Hannah) Harrold, MI; and Josh (Angel) Randall and Jacob Randall.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Jewell "Julie" (Paul) Wolfe, and Nancy (Red) Schmieman; and brother Donald (Lavone) Reader; grandchildren, Kyla Jean Harrold; great grandchildren, Samuel Harrold and Connor Harrold.
Services for Jean will be held at the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Visitation will be from 11 AM- 1 PM with the funeral service at 1 PM officiated by nephews Pastor Brock Meyer and Pastor Ron Meyer. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery, Fairmount.
