Michael L. Mullenix, 81, passed away in Wesleyan Health and Rehabilitation Center on October 30, 2024. He was born in Wabash on November 18, 1942 to the late Donald and Betty Louis (Clapp) Mullenix.
Mike was a 1960 graduate of Marion High School where he was on a vocational printing course and loved it. He attended Ball State University but left after deciding to enlist in the Army and after basic combat training in Ft. Knox and advanced combat training in Ft. McClellan he attended officer candidate School in Ft. Benning. He arrived in Vietnam in 1968 and functioned as a rifleman and radio telephone operator. He remained until 1970 after re-enlisting and extending his tour and reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. In March of 1970 he returned to the States and reported to the Tactics Committee at Fort Polk and was assigned as a range controller on Peason Ridge. Over the years he served 2 enlistments in the Army, 2 in the Ready Reserve, 1 in the National Guard and 2 in the Guard Reserve and attained the rank of Command Sergeant-Major.
After his service with the military he worked for many years as a self-employed handyman as well as owning 2 small restaurants where he loved to cook. He retired from Home Depot in Marion where he worked as a millwork specialist.
Mike was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a charter member of the Alexander Hamilton Chapter in Noblesville. He was the editor of the "Hoosier Patriot", the official publication of the Indiana State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #10, DAV and VFW.
Mike married Margot (Hays) Coppock in 1998 and joined her life long church Nelson Street Wesleyan where he became a member of the board of administration, the board of trustees and taught adult Sunday School and Bible study for many years. He also cooked many meals for the congregation in fellowship hall over the years. Mike and Margot recently celebrated their 26th anniversary.
He is survived by his wife, Margot Hays Coppock Mullenix; children, Dawn Marie (Steven) Guptill, Charlotte, North Carolina; Craig Allen Mullenix, Indianapolis; step-children, Rita (Jay) Gilbert, Noblesville; Karen E. (Bobby L.) McDonald, Plainfield; sister, Tana Craun, Barttersville; two grandchildren, Elisabeth Guptill and Andrew Guptill.
He is also preceded in death by his step-children, Tony Coppock; Kathryn Leming; Jon E. Coppock; Thomas E. Coppock; brothers, Randal Mullenix and David Mullenix.
Visitation will be held from 11:00am-1:00pm, Tuesday, November 5, 2024 in Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, Marion Chapel, 2722 South Washington Street, Marion. The funeral will begin at 1:00pm in the funeral home with Pastor Edward Silliman officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Gardens of Memory, Marion, Indiana.
