Robert Allen Detherage, 81, died December 31st at 12:55 a.m. at Wesleyan Health Care Center, Marion, Indiana, from complications due to strokes.
He was born in Lebanon, Missouri on April 14, 1943 to Wanda R Hill and James R Detherage.
He married Deanna Joan Hipskind on March 13, 1965. They were married for 55 years when Deanna passed away in January of 2021. Robert, "Bob" to his friends, grew up spending time between his grandparents, Esther and William "Pop" Hill and his mother.
Bob spent most of his life living in Marion, working and raising their 5 children (Sonja, Bob, Scott, Kyle and Karmyn) with Deanna. He worked the longest as a raker, to spread, smooth and fine-tune the asphalt application after the paver lays the initial layer. In his free time he loved finding and fixing things that others thought were useless...a master of "repurposing" long before it became trendy. Cars, televisions, small appliances, bicycles, anything mechanical, you name it, he could fix it. Bob's favorite season of the year was Deer Season!
He was an avid hunter for the majority of his long life, still climbing into a tree stand into his 70's. Bow, crossbow, and muzzle-loader hunting was as much a way of providing for his family as working. When he was 60 he and Deanna moved to Jonesboro. They spent 18 years there together before she passed.
Survivors include his children: Sonja (Norm) Dziedzic of Park Ridge, Illinois; Bob Detherage II of Marion; Kyle Detherage of Fairmount; and Karmyn Detherage of Marion; eleven grandchildren: Wesley and Grace Dziedzic (Sonja and Norm); Rhiannon and Corey Driscoll (Bob); Nevaeh and Kamara Detherage (Kyle); and Jalen, McKenzie, Maurice Detherage; Garond and Camryn McCray/Detherage (Karmyn); one great-grandson, Liam John Frieszell-Detherage (McKenzie). Siblings: Stephen P (Laura) Kennedy Brown, Starr (Robert) Kennedy Houston, Martha Jane "Marty" Cohn Kaple and Keith King.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 4th at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 4601 S Western Ave, Marion, IN, 46953 from 1:00-3:00 pm. A short graveside prayer service will be immediately following at Park Cemetery, 7843 S 150 E, Fairmount.

Sending my deepest condolences to Sonja and the entire family. I had seen Sonja last year at Wesleyan Nursing Home after 40+ years. I was there visiting my uncle, and she was visiting her father. My uncle also passed in September. May God's love comfort you.
