John, the adopted son of Roy and Helen Engberg, was born in Chicago, IL on August 19, 1935. He was raised in Rockford, IL where he graduated from East Rockford High School. Following high school, he attended Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. He subsequently moved to Red Oak, IA, where he married his college sweetheart, Beverly A. Swanson. In the ensuing years, he served three years in the U.S. Army and attended the University of Maryland, at College Park, MD, where he graduated with honors in 1961. From 1961 until his retirement in 1992, he was employed by the National Security Agency. During his career, he attended the Armed Forces Staff College and served at overseas posts for several years.
In 2001, he and his wife moved from Bowie, MD to Citrus County. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness for several years, where he was honored as an Elder Emeritus in 2018. He currently attended the Hernando United Methodist Church.
John had considerable voice training as a young man and was an accomplished baritone. He had the leading roles in his high school operettas, sang and toured with the Augustana Choir, and had the lead role in the 1954 summer stock production of "No, No, Nanette" in Rock Island, IL. He loved swimming and was a water safety instructor for several years.
After his retirement, he developed an interest in computers and taught and provided technical support to members of Mac user groups in the Washington, DC area and here in Citrus County. He became an avid runner after taking up the sport at the age of 35. He ran numerous 5Ks and a World Runner's 24 Hour Marathon in 1976, at which he and his Armed Forces Staff College teammates ran a total of over 213 miles. He was very proud of that accomplishment.
