John passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2024 after a brief illness at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa.
He was born in Oak Park, Illinois and grew up in Hinsdale, Illinois, graduating from The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. He attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he was a member of the golf team and Psi Upsilon fraternity, and later attended the University of Illinois at Champaign.
In 1958, John joined the US Army's 1st Cavalry Division and served in Japan for two years. Upon returning home, John joined his father's roadbuilding company, George H. Hartong Construction, constructing highways all over the Midwest. An avid golfer, he won the Junior Amateur Golf Championship in Illinois.
In 1973, he retired to Crystal River where he became a member of both Seven Rivers Golf and Country Club and The Plantation, where he won the men's championship at both clubs and and over the years, made ten holes-in-one. During his time in Crystal River, he was on the board of Seven Rivers, on the vestry at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, and served on the zoning board of Crystal River from 1974 to 1988. John was also very proud of his membership in AA for 35 years and for years led weekly AA meetings.
John was preceded in death by his parents George and Adelaide Nash Hartong and wife Martha Hartong. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara (Bobbe) Yeisley Hartong, sons John Jr. (Val) of Nashville, Tennessee, David (Elaine) of Chicago, Illinois, Tom (Gretchen) of Spring Hill, Florida, and Sam of Crystal River, along with stepdaughter Lori (David) Zeller of Hartland, Wisconsin, stepson Todd (Sherry) Yeisley of Lake Keoway, South Carolina, sister Barbara Hartong Belt of Charlotte, North Carolina and sister-in-law Susan Trudell of Waunakee, Wisconsin. John is also survived by 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and three nieces.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 9870 W. Fort Island Trail, Crystal River, Florida 34429 at 10 A.M. on March 2nd, 2024. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Anne's Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice.
