Brian Schafer Obituary

SCHAFER

Brian Andrew Schafer, 27, of Edgewood, Kentucky, passed away suddenly on June 17, 2017 after several years struggling with mental illness. Brian loved life, enjoyed the outdoors and positively impacted the lives of many, and his passing leaves a hole that can never be filled. Brian's fun-loving personality and contagious sense of humor could light up a room, and his keen intellect enabled him to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Brian graduated in 2008 from Covington Catholic High School where he played on the golf, basketball and football teams, was president of the Bug Club and dedicated to community service. He was a member of Cov Cath's 2006 state champion football team. Brian matriculated to the University of Notre Dame from which he graduated in 2012 with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree. While at Notre Dame, Brian enjoyed many extracurricular activities, excelling particularly at Bengal Bouts boxing and Bookstore Basketball. Brian is survived by his loving mother Nancy Schafer, his father Mike Schafer, brothers Daniel Schafer and Stephen Schafer, beloved dog Kelsey, grandmother Alfreda Sheft, ten uncles and aunts, and 27 cousins, all of whom will miss his beautiful smile and wonderful laugh. Visitation will be held Friday June 23,2017 from 4:00 pm until 7:00pm at Middendorf Funeral Home 3312 Madison Pike, Ft. Wright, KY 41017. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 24, 2017 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Edgewood, Kentucky. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery. Schafer Family,

So many years have passed since our paths have crossed but that didn't lighten the sadness I felt when I heard about Brian. He will always be with you in your heart, in your memories and in all the ways he touched your life each day. I pray someday you will remember him with less sadness and more joy.
God bless your family, Paula Dahmus

Schafer family,
Brian was a close friend of mine during our time at St. Pius. I have many memories with Brian, running around Edgewood, dances at school, passing notes around in class, and after school meet-ups at BP. He was always a great friend and so kind during our middle school days. I will never forget those times with him and will always remember his contagious smile. I am praying for your family and hope that you find peace during this difficult time.

Dear Schafer family,

I am so sorry to hear about Brian. It only seems like last week that Brian and I were running up and down the basketball court together wearing our Northern Kentucky Demons AAU jersey. I've been away from NKY for awhile because of school and now residency, but I always enjoyed crossing paths with Brian at LA fitness or somewhere around NKY when I happened to be in town. He always made sure to say hey and ask how things were going or how I was doing. Brian was a good person and may he rest in peace. I will be praying for you all during these difficult times.

With deepest sympathy,

Chris Bondick

When I was a sophomore in High School at CCH, Brian and I competed against each other almost our whole entire football season to try and earn the starting spot as free safety on the Junior Varsity football team. Back and forth each week one of us would succeed or fail, and one of us would either bask in the glory of being the starter that week, or we would be irritated sitting on the bench while the other played. Brian and I might not have been fond of each other during our JV season, as we were both fierce competitors and did not enjoy having to share playing time, but we sucked it up and played our hearts out for our team to always try and achieve victory. I personally know that Brian made me a better athlete and competitor by challenging me to push to be better and stronger after each game and practice, and I would like to think I did the same for him. After our JV season was done, we both finally saw eye to eye during the 2006 varsity playoff run, and made it our mission to try and cause as much havoc as possible against our starting Varsity Offense by playing the best that we could on Defense together. We put aside our differences and enjoyed the State Championship that we won in 2006, and basked in the glory together as teammates.

Brian was always very good to me, was always friendly, and willing to lend a hand with anything, especially when I was at a low in my life in high school. He always took time during the day to ask me how i was doing, and asked if there was anything I needed, I cannot be more grateful for the kindness he showed me at that time in my life. It is hard to believe that he has passed away, and my condolences and prayers are with his family during this most trying time. I pray that you find peace knowing Brian was a good man and a good friend, and that he will be missed.
