Dorothy MENNINGER Obituary
MENNINGER Dorothy Catherine was called to death March 13, 2002 at The Heart of Florida Hospital in Davenport, Florida after a short illness. She was born in Hamilton, OH on February 6, 1909, the daughter of James Hawley Armstrong and Amelia Finger Pruesch of Oldenberg, Indiana. She married her husband Joseph John Menninger on July 7, 1929 at St. Louis Church in Cincinnati. Together they founded the Menninger Sporting Goods Company in 1943 and watched it grow into one of the highest and most respected members of the industry. Joseph Menninger passed away April 1, 1968 and as chairman of the Board of the Menninger Corporation, Dorothy managed the business with her son Richard M. Menninger. She took an active part in running the corporation, attending trade shows throughout the United States and meeting many of the clients with wom they maintained long and lasting friendships. Since the death of her husband Dorothy and Richard became an inseparable team. Richard devoted the rest of his life to her every care and need and together they weathered the ups and downs of the real world. She co-founded with her son Richard the Society of the Risen Christ-Saints Francis and Jude which provides financial assistance for deserving youth wanting a Christian based education. This society also provides financial aid for drug and alcohol counseling. Her cousin, Dr. Karl A. Menninger of the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas gave her the title "The Great Lady' for her active role as a symbol of love for abused and neglected children. Dorothy served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Menninger Educational Center and the Villages Homes for abused and neglected children in Topeka, Kansas. She was a beacon in the field of mental health and volunteered her services wherever help was needed. Loving mother of Richard M. Menniger and the late James E. and Joseph J. Menninger. Mother-in-law of Rosemary Menninger Richeson and Kathleen Menninger, cherished grandmother of Terril J. Broshere, Linda K. Krause, Judith A. Phillot, James J. Neal R., Joseph J. Menninger, Tamara S. and Sr. Leah R. Menninger O.F.M. Special grandchild Eric Scott Schroeder. Devoted friend Carmella Gill. Dear sister of the late Lillian Mitchell, Earl Armstrong and Adele Armstrong, aunt of Marilyn Mitchell, Donald Mitchell, Patricia Fishwick and Robert Kilgour. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Dorothy C. Menninger Memorial Fund at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains, 325 W. 8th St., Cincinnati, OH 45202. Calling hours will be held at Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home, 4989 Glenway Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45238, from 5-8 P.M., Thursday, March 21, 2002. The Funeral Mass will be con-celebrated on Friday at 10 A.M. at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains with The Rev. James A. Bramlage, Rev. Francis J. Miller and The Most Rev. Danie E. Pilarczyk, Archbishop of Cincinnati presiding.
