Elmer THOMAS Obituary
Elmer R., Beloved husband of Mary Catherine Thomas. Devoted father of Cynthia Suzanne, Robert Paul, and Mark Steven Thomas and father-in-law of Kathryn Sena Thomas. Loving granddad of Wes, John, and Will Thomas. Devoted brother of sisters Mary Alsa (Edward, deceased) Miller and the late Lorraine (Chet) Hosac, brothers Weldon (Juanita) Thomas, Lloyd (Sharon) Thomas, and the late Louis (Genevieve) Thomas, and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Passed Wednesday June 13, 2012 at age 81 years. Resident of Loveland. Private services to be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial Celebration of the Life of Elmer Thomas to be held at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati Sunday September 30, 2012. From 1966 to 1995, Dr. Thomas conducted and taught at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati where he built one of the leading choral programs in the United States and an extensive graduate program for conductors. As Conductor of Choruses for the Cincinnati May Festival, Dr. Thomas worked with many of the world's leading conductors (Bernstein, Shaw, Levine, Conlon, Rudolf, Gielen, Rudel, Schippers, Nelson). He was Founder and Music Director of The Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati and was Director of Music at Armstrong Chapel United Methodist Church. Dr. Thomas was a docent at the Cincinnati Art Museum and an avid fly fisherman and golfer. Praise and tributes to a wonderful conducting teacher and musician. For over 30 years I have practiced what I learned from him at CCM, and continue to challenge my choirs and singers with an honest seriousness I learned from Elmer. I have precious few good memories from my time at CCM, but singing for Elmer is one of them. What a brilliant conductor and musician. So glad to have known and worked with him. Farewell, Dr. Thomas!

A great musician and friend has left us. I will always be grateful for all of Elmer's support during my studies at Cincinnati. My thoughts are with him and his family.

Elmer's record and accomplishments speak loudly of his contributions to the world of music he so dearly loved. He was a good friend while I was at the College fo Idaho 1954-57 - in fact he was the winner when we both ran for Student Body President - I did remain as a member of the Student Council and greatly enjoyed working with Elmer.
