The Church has lost one of the great ones. He was a mentor and a friend. Here is a life to be celebrated.

Emerson Colaw was one of the finest people I have ever known. He and Jane and their family were very close to the Mechem family over the years. Indeed, Emerson married all three of our kids!
I admired him in so many ways. He was truly a man of God. Rest in peace dear friend.

When I joined the staff at the Cincinnati Enquirer, I was surprised to find that perhaps a third of the people there attended (at least occasionally) Hyde Park Community Church to hear how Emerson Colaw made sense of what was happening in society, in the country and in the world. After hearing him a few times, my wife and I eagerly changed denominations and joined the church with our two sons.
His preaching was so insightful and so connected to recent news about public policy, science, medicine, sociology and culture that I eventually told people that he rarely preached a sermon that could have been written a month earlier.
Emerson both soothed our anxieties each Sunday while also challenging us to find ways in our own professions, families and neighborhoods to address impediments to the Kingdom of God on earth. After I left Cincinnati to be a national religion reporter, I dealt with him as a bishop of the church. I found him in that role and as a part of the national leadership of a denomination to be the same as I had known him at Hyde Park -- a pillar of moderation and caring openness in administration, personal relations, theology and spirit.

My sympathy goes to the Colaw family in the death of Bishop Emerson Colaw who was both a family friend and leader of Hyde Park United Methodist Church. I will always remember when he lead my confirmation class at Huston Woods. He was a great leader and inspiration to all.

Here is man who is leaving one heck of a foot print on many lives including mine. I visited him a couple of months ago at Twin Lakes and his impact was still there. Life goes on and so will he. Lord thank you , for the gift of Emerson Colaw.

It was a blessing to have known Bishop Emerson Colaw. When I listened to his sermons at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, I felt he was speaking directly to me. My father, Charles Beardslee was inspired by Bishop Colaw to lead the Men's Bible Study Group and admired him greatly. Bishop Colaw was a wonderful man with an incredible gift for connecting with others. My deepest sympathy goes out to his friends and family as I lift them up in prayer. ~ Cheryl Beardslee
