I just saw a write up in Purcell Marian alumni magazine. Read about your son who was an American hero. You are now with your son in heaven. Sorry I didn't know you had passed until today. You were great friends with the DeLuca family and Sorrento's. You always made us smile. We had a connection with Riardo, Italy. Missing you say hello to Papa, Mama and Willie.

For some reason I thought of Guy this morning while sitting at beakfast in Charleston SC ... So I did a quick search and was shocked to see he had just passed a month ago!!!

Guy worked in my insurance agency where he was liked and admired by all. He was kind hearted - BIG hearted - and truly a friend to all of us.

I'm certain his warmth and positive attitude was an inspiration to his many students and business associates over the years!

Coach Barattieri is a true Renaissance man; had him for English and football at Moeller. His commencement address I often quote: "if you remember nothing more then this from 4 years of high school, may it be this:
Know thyself
and Nothing in excess"
So true.
Before I went to college to play football, which I doubted I could in the Big Ten, Coach Bear without hesitation, told me I could and believed I could make a contribution. His belief and confidence in me, helped me make travel squad as a freshmen, and later as captain.
A great inspiration in my life, and many others.
We should all be as good as he; and leave such lasting memories.
Enjoy heaven, Bear....and keep inspiring us!

My brother was the funniest person I know. He always had a profanity for every situation. His stories were so funny. I know he had his down times but he was my brother. I will miss him so much. Love you, Dick.

Had the pleasure of working with Dick for the last five years at the Ted Marty and Associates Insurance Agency. Dick had a great sense of humor and always kept us laughing with his stories. He is definitely missed and the office is very quiet without him. My condolences to his family and the many other friends who will miss him.

The "Bear" was a true mentor and inspiration to those of us who were lucky to have been taught by him. I had him for Greek Mythology and he would often read from Homer's Odyssey or the Iliad, looking every bit the part of Achilles or Odysseus, a great giant of a man, in more ways than one. He inspired in me a lifelong love of Greek and Roman Mythology and Classical Literature, and by extension, literature in general. Thank you "Bear", you were a great man and you will be missed!

For you "Bear"...

"Like the generations of leaves, the lives of mortal men. Now the wind scatters the old leaves across the earth, now the living timber bursts with the new buds and spring comes round again. And so with men: as one generation comes to life, another dies away."
Homer, The Iliad

Such a funny and interesting man. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him a few times at the Madeira Inn and he was always a hoot to talk to. Rest in peace and keep them laughing.

Hated English Literature at Moeller until the "Bear" walked into class and belted out a couple of verses from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey... Wow ...I was hooked !! I always think of him anytime I see a movie about Greek mythology or related eras.
Even today, some 40 + years later, I'm stilled called by my nickname I acquired from taking his Classical Lit classes..."Odeece"
Condolences to the family...he touched so many lives and will be missed by one and all...

For previous message re Dick's sense of humor, i forgot to add the info below!

June 27, 2016

I had the pleasure of knowing Dick under two different circumstances; one as a sophomore English teacher at Moeller in 67, and again as a fellow English teacher at Purcell in the early 70's. If a surgeon could have preserved Dick's sense of humor in a beaker, it would resemble a dry martini (shaken, not stirred).

He was absolutely one of the funnier men I've met in my life, and was more than capable of appreciating the innate humor of a situation when the joke was on him. Two examples:

One day our sophomore class decided to meet in an unoccupied room so when Dick came to his regular class room, no one was there. When he found us in the other room, he had a bigger grin on his face than any of us did.

Dick was never big on grading for class participation. There was one student who never made it to our class, and after a while when Dick called his name for attendance, one of us would take turns answering for the guy. This went on for months until the gag was up; again it was Dick who seemed to enjoy the prank more than any of us did.

It was even more of a pleasure if not an honor to be a fellow English teacher with Dick at Purcell. As a very young, naïve, and way too serious teacher at the time, it probably wasn't until this very moment that I realize Dick had already learned there was no sense in sweating the small stuff, and In Dick's mind, everything was small stuff. I'm sure Dick left this world the same way he lived his life; not sweating the fact he was dying way too young for someone who still had so much humor to give the world. I believe in a next life, and I am sure Heaven is a happier place today having Dick there.

Dick was bigger than life! Always a smile and that grin! May he rest in peace. He was a fantastic teacher that would inject passion into every subject he taught. I'm sure that he and his son are making heaven a better place! I truly morn his passing!

Mr. Barattieri was my English teacher during my junior year at Moeller. While he was a football coach he was far more cerebral than most the coaches and other faculty for that matter. He loved to teach Beowulf and read sections from it in class. As the decades passed and I heard references to Beowulf or Grendel my thoughts would always turn to that class and year of English with him. Now that is a legacy. Rest in peace "Bear".
