My memories of James Neiheisel came from being a friend of his son Bill. I remember well seeing the Commander in his Navy dress whites. Every time I saw him, he always had a smile on his face. I would joke with him that we shared the same birthday, which would make us both laugh.
My condolences to his family and friends.

James Neiheisel was my dear father-in-law. What a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, friend and mentor to all who knew him! He will long be remembered for his humor, his love of the outdoors and golfing, his dedication to various fields of science, and the loving relationships he had with so many family members. He was such an example of what it means to "age successfully" by taking care of one's own health, despite setbacks. God bless you Jim, for all of the happy memories.

Part of U.S. Navy Fight Song tribute to Commander Neiheisel:
"...Anchors aweigh my boys, anchors away! Farewell to foreign shores,
we sail at break of day.
Through our last night ashore,
-drink to the foam,
until we meet once more, heres' wishing you a happy voyage home!
Blue of the mighty deep,
Gold of God's great sun;
Let these our colors be, till all of time be done.
-Faith, courage, service true,
With honor over all."
Commander Neiheisel-May God fill
the sails of your ship with the love and appreciation of your family, friends and country. Bon voyage, dear sailor; have a peaceful journey and joyous reunion with loved ones who sailed before-in heaven.

I was fortunate enough to meet U.S. Navy Commander Neiheisel through his son William, who married my sister. His friendly, kind, soft-spoken manner combined with amazing intelligence and great sense of humor was a positive influence on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Many years ago I attended an EPA course Mr. Neiheisel was instructing on hazardous geo-gasses detection methods, equipment and control. His knowledge, expertise and instruction during the early days of Radon/hazardous gas detection and prevention has no doubt aided in saving many lives. Commander Neiheisel was also a caring, loving Father and friend to all.
As a friend, relative and former U.S.A.F. Officer, I thank and salute Commander Neiheisel for his dedicated hard work, honor and sacrifice in wartime US Navy service and for his family. James P.

You're never gone from our lives, Dad, just transformed. . . man must sacrifice the qualities and attributes of the world of nature for the qualities and attributes of the world of God. For instance, consider the substance we call iron. Observe its qualities; it is solid, black, cold. These are the characteristics of iron. When the same iron absorbs heat from the fire, it sacrifices its attribute of solidity for the attribute of fluidity. It sacrifices its attribute of darkness for the attribute of light, which is a quality of the fire. It sacrifices its attribute of coldness to the quality of heat which the fire possesses so that in the iron there remains no solidity, darkness or cold. It becomes illumined and transformed, having sacrificed its qualities to the qualities and attributes of the fire. Abdul-Baha, The Promulgation of Universal Peace

Uncle Jim was an inspiration to us all. His life was filled with accomplishments in military, education, and government research. A true role model. Even in his later years he maintained fervor for frequent exercise and golf. We loved to hear him talk about early life on the farm and his travels on the Black Sea doing government research. He will be missed.
