Mary GRESSEL Obituary

GRESSEL

Mary Louise of Hamilton passed away on April 28, at Hospice of Hamilton. Mrs. Gressel was born in Detroit, MI, the second daughter of Jessie (Wright) and William Oswald. She graduated from Cass Technical High School and the Henry Ford Hospital of School of Nursing. Mrs. Gressel worked as a public health nurse for the City of Detroit. She walked her territory in Hamtramck, where the mob approached her to run numbers for them, an offer she was allowed to refuse. She joined the Army Air Corps to see the world, and was assigned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, OH, where she worked in the hospital as a pediatric nurse. Her travel plans were shelved when she met and fell in love with Captain Gregory Gressell, MD. When their tours were up, the couple returned to Hamilton, Dr. Gressel's hometown, where he started his medical practice and they started their family. While her children were young Mrs. Gressel was an avid school volunteer. Later she was a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Gressel also traveled extensively with family and friends. Dr. Gressel preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Gressel is survived by her children: Michele Gressel, Dr. Michael (Cheri) Gressel, Gerry (Julie) Gressel, Sandra (George) McDonald, Stephen (Julia) Gressel, and Anthony (Carleen) Gressel; and her grandchildren: Gregory Gressel, Christopher Gressel, Jessica Toboika, Brant Gressel, Michael McDonald, Ashley McDonald, and Matthew Gressel. She is also survived by her sisters, Evelyn (William) Bailey and Dorothy (Charles) Gomori; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents and her sister, Shirley Oswald, preceded her death. Services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Saint Anne Episcopal Church, 6461 Tylersville Rd., West Chester, OH 45069 with Rev. Jeff L. Bunke, Rector. Burial will follow at St. Stephen Cemetery in Hamilton. The family thanks Drs. Harry Davin, Paula Weisenberger, and George Manitsas for their years of devoted care, and the people of Hospice of Hamilton for their kindness and care. The family suggests contributions be made to Hospice of Hamilton, to the Miami University Hamilton Campus Nursing Scholarship, or the charity of your choice. The Avance Funeral Home & Crematory, Fairfield is serving the family. Condolences may be offered at www.avancefuneralhome.com
