Teddy, Amanda, and Emily,
We, like everyone who knew him, will miss him. He always had that upbeat and can-do attitude that was contagious to those around him. He was blessed to have been able to see both girls be very successful in life and wonderful people. Teddy, I'm sure Miles was also very thankful for your strength during those tough times - well done. We will save a seat for him at the Super Bowl party.

Dear Teddy and girls,
I was so very saddened to hear about Miles--your beloved husband and father. He certainly fought valiantly against his cancer and it did not stop him from living his life on his terms right up until the end! Please know Teddy if there is anything you need all you need to do is ask! God's peace Karen

My tears shed today for you, Teddy, Amanda and Emily. My heart aches for Christie, Ray , Sherri and Aunt Joyce.
So many memories of Miles as children playing at Grandmother's home in Savannah every summer or spring when we were young grasshoppers. Oh, so early that God has taken you from us. The memories that each and every one of his family and friends have will sting at first, but offer comfort in the coming days and years....until we all come together behind the Gates of Heaven.
I pray the Lord comforts you all... and holds you close under his Mighty Wing.
Miles..... Thank you for all the summer memories as children,gosh..playing on the push up bar in the back yard.. and playing hide and seek behind Grandmother's crab-apple trees. .... and though it has been many moons ago..it seems just like yesterday. But Today... you rest in the arms of God... As you get acquainted , soon you will be preparing a mansion for your loved ones to one day share.... I want to include the poem of Kahlil Gibran on Death.....
And as the last words are "Dance".... I hope that you Dance! For now, today..you are truly in wonderful company with God.
Dance Miles!!! Dance.
We will so sadly miss you....
Death
#
Then Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death."
And he said:
You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.
In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.
Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.
Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king
Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling
For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun
And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.
~Khalil Gibran

We knew Miles the best during our time in Knoxville together. Miles was a hard worker but always had time to play with the kids or share a laugh. He raised his children to be kind, caring, and respectful. I remember him taking time to go help others in need in . . . was it the Honduras?? We will miss you, Miles.

I have several memories about Miles. Many involve his behemoth German Sheppard Max, or his passion for the rigors and triumphs of American rugby (We went to a championship match in Conshohocken once). But the story nearest to my heart involves two men, and a football.
It was a balmy day in Savannah, and as we waited eagerly beside the crackling tarp housing our Slow Country Boiled crawfish, shrimp, corn, and all the trimmings one could imagine, I anxiously looked around for some way to divert my rumbling belly. Bri, Mandy and Emily were on the swing set, but there were only three swings. Uncle Ray and Chris were deeply involved in some conversation about how true Southern iced tea has a half inch layer of sugar at the bottom. And Miles, well, Miles was...available.
I asked him if he wanted to toss the football around. He said yes and we begin the toss about ten feet apart. However, as all men know, no football catch remains at this distance, and we began moving further out, soon throwing deep spirals across the backyard. Now of all my memories of Miles, I remember this one most, because in a strange way it was the closest connection we ever had. Can two friends converse with a football instead of with the English language? Who is to say. But I know I felt closer to Miles that day than I ever had before.

I always looked forward to spending time with Uncle Miles. As a child whenever I heard he was coming to town for a visit I knew that a fun time was in store. My best vacation memories are of times spent with Uncle Miles, Aunt Teddy and my cousins. Searching for fossils, exploring Mammoth Cave, white water rafting and platypi "hunting" at night with a flash light (where Miles walked away with a few leech "hitch hikers" attached)are just a few unforgettable times with my Uncle Miles.
One of the funniest memories I have that still makes me laugh out loud when I think of it is a time we were on a trip to Australia. Miles had taken off hiking to search for some plant or something(what he was doing is, oddly, irrelevant to the story) and us girls stayed behind by the car. We began to get very hungry as he was gone a long time. When we tried to open the car to get the food we had pack we found that he had locked the car. I just remember the look on Amanda's face when we realized the food was out of our reach. We stood there in hopeless silence as we stared pathetically at the food that sat inches away from our finger tips. Unlike Miles we could not sustain ourselves on peanuts and mints.
I have so many fun, loving and hilarious memories of my Uncle Miles. I owe a great deal of thanks to him for filling these times in my life with such joy and happiness. He will be missed more than can be expressed.
Just the simple thought of how his hug felt, his laugh sounded or the way he could capture you in one of his stories brings a smile to my face. For that I owe him one more big Thank You.
