We think of all of you every day. Even though there are so many miles between all of us, you are in all we see and do.
From the log house to the left, to the cottage on the right, to the fire pit across the street, to the ice pick buried somewhere in the walls of this house, you are all with us.
Love to you all

A year has gone by and the second summer is starting without you. Empty pool, cold grill, no parties, friends and family have moved on. Memories at every turn. "I miss you. They say I'll be ok but I'm not going to...ever get over you".
July 16, 2013
Dear Bob,
I got the call at about 7 a.m. the morning you died while I was brushing my teeth and getting ready for work. “...dad died,” I heard my boyfriend say as he handed me my phone. I didn't catch the first part and, by the time the latter half had registered - for one of the most frightening moments of my life - I thought he was talking about my dad. “Cassy's on the phone. I think her dad just died.” In true Cassy fashion, putting others' feelings before her own, she apologized for calling me so early and starting my day with the terrible news, “but I just wanted to call because he loved you so much,” she told me. Damn.
I miss you like you were my own dad. Though we were not related by blood, I have always considered your “baby girl” a sister from another mister, if you will, ever since we became inseparable friends as roommates our first semester of college. You were like my own dad in so many ways. Strong. Silent. Loyal. Wise. A lover of a good beer. And only caring for his family more than his outdoor hobbies and his perfectly manicured lawn.
I think I miss you so much, in part, because I feel like I didn't have enough time to say my goodbyes. I saw you two days earlier during one of my many Facetime sessions with Cass. I had no idea you had gotten that bad. I kept up with the updates on the blog for you, but I didn't expect to see you - a shell of you - like that. Unrecognizable. Skeletal. Mouth open and eyes vacant. A body. Not the Bobster I knew. I shouted “Hi Bob!” to you and waved. I still wonder if you heard my voice. I hope you did.
I think about you a lot, Bob. The last time I saw you in the backyard (one of your sanctuaries). Soaking up some warm sun while floating in your pool and drinking my first Shock Top. The first time I met you. We were out eating, you, me, Cass and Vicki, and you made fun of Cassy's dinner etiquette all night with your quiet sarcasm. Your simple one-liners were always dry, entertaining and perfectly timed. I'm going to miss that about you, Bob.
I surprised Cassy with a visit recently over the Memorial Day weekend. I think the trip ended up comforting me more than her. She seems to be doing really well. She has her down days. Like the one she spent working in the backyard. I would imagine it's really hard to be in that backyard and not feel you everywhere in it. She says she misses your hugs and your smile the most (even though she hugs and smiles just like you). But she seems to be carrying on like quite the soldier. The Vickster, too. She looked absolutely great at brunch! I didn't get to see Craig because he was away for the weekend at a music festival, a sign that he is getting back to normal as well. You will forever be a huge part of your family, though, Bob. That's for sure.
It was a good visit, though. We hung out with the dogs, ate a lot of great Cincinnati staple food, drank a lot of beer, laughed and reminisced, and got pedicures. It was just like college again. I just wanted to make sure she got some time to relax and feel normal again. Vicki agreed it would be good for her. A part of me did it for you, too. Or perhaps to feel like I at least did something for you. Either way, she did seem happy. Mission accomplished, I guess.
But there are times I don't know what to say to her. Like when we passed the Father's Day aisle at Target. I could tell it caught her eye. I think we both tried to avoid it. I didn't say anything. I just watched her eyes linger on it, and eventually snap out of it, eager to move on from the thought of not having a father for Father's Day this year. This has never happened between us before - not knowing what to say or do when the other is going through a hard time. We used to have having a sick parent in common - you battling your cancer and my mom slowly surrendering to her Alzheimer's. Now her sick parent is gone and, while mine is still gradually slipping away, I feel like the two experiences are so different now. And almost like I've abandoned my friend. She must feel so alone and I hate that I can't do anything about that. Instead, I settle with trying to make her laugh and smile as much as possible. I hope I'm doing a good job.
Yes, I loved you like my own dad, Bob. I still can't think of you without smiling at the memory of your smile, and tearing up at the fact that I will never see you wear it again. But I thank you for leaving me with such great memories and for giving me my Cincinnati family. I thank you for being an amazing man, husband, and father for that family. And I thank you for the huge role you played in Cassy being the best friend she has always been and the woman she has grown to be. I know I'm not the only one in this world whose life is better for having had her in it.
I hope you're somewhere enjoying an ice-cold beer on a well-manicured lawn, truly resting in peace.
I'll always love and miss you, Bobster.
With much love and a heavy heart,
Rickeena

I just found out about Bob's passing. I can't tell you how sorry I am.
I moved to The neighborhood in 2003 and discovered Ritze's shortly thereafter. As you know, I have zero mechanical ability and I always felt at the mercy of the mechanic - it led to high bills and strained relationships. I was hoping better at Ritze's.
In the beginning I used to wonder why Bob never called me to check on repairs you planned to make or to tell me when it was done. The other places call you and tell you they need to do "this and this and this" . They request your permission to spend their money.
After a while I realized this was a good quirk of doing business at Ritze's. Those other places call because they are up selling. Bob did business in an honest way. If you needed it, he would put it on your car. No need to call. He was asking that you trust him and, after a number of times telling you guys that I needed something fixed and you telling me I didn't, I really did trust Ritze's. It is a return to times when business was done with a handshake. I like that.
I even quit calling to ask if my car was done. I just showed up. I knew Bob would call if it was going to take more than a day. Otherwise, it would be waiting for me.
I've told a dozen people over the years about Ritze's. Hopefully, some of them have made their way to your shop. I even have my father-in-law to try to time his repairs when he comes in from Milwaukee so he can get them done at Ritze's.
Bob was always a stand up guy, just like you two. For a guy who knows nothing about cars, I can't tell you how much a relief it is to deal with people like you.
I read many good things that people said about him in the online guest book. I didn't know him well, but my interactions with him always gave me a feeling he was a regular, down to earth great guy. my wife said the same - in fact , she might like you guys more than I do.
I'm sorry for your loss. Hang in there.
