Shirley Bernstein Obituary

Shirley Tennenbaum Bernstein

Cincinnati - Shirley T. Bernstein, age 97, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, wife of the late Benjamin Bernstein, mother of Linda (Mark) Peroff, Jimmy (Barbara) Bernstein and Alan (Mary) Bernstein, sister of the late Stanley Tennenbaum, grandmother of Bryan and Michael Peroff, Rob, Brad and Amy Bernstein, Terri and Benjamin Bernstein and the late David Peroff, also survived by 8 great grandchildren. Shirley was born in Cincinnati and became a lifelong contributor to the community. She grew up in North Avondale and raised her family in Bond Hill. After returning from Ecuador while accompanying her late husband, who was on assignment with the U.S. Agency for International Development Peace Corps, she and Ben lived out their remaining years in Hyde Park. She graduated from Walnut Hills High School and received her college degree from the University of Cincinnati. Shirley was Ben's partner in developing their many restaurant ventures in Cincinnati. She and Ben developed their first restaurant, El Greco in Southgate, KY and then went on to develop Mike Fink, Crockett's River Café, and Covington Landing, floating on the Ohio River. The two of them became known as that extraordinary couple that spurred the restaurant developments along the downtown stretch of the Ohio River. She and Ben also developed BB Riverboats excursion boat operation which has grown to become a Cincinnati icon for residents, tourists, and conventioneers. The business has been passed on to the next generation of Bernstein's and is now under the direction of her son, Alan, and grandchildren, Terri and Ben. She and Ben continued on to create two innovative restaurants in downtown Cincinnati, Benjamin's and Shirley's Café. Shirley was always known for her infectious and dynamic personality and was said to be able to remember all of the customer's names she came into contact with at the restaurants. She was a truly genuine individual that was at times very opinionated and outspoken but loved and respected by everyone. She made a lasting impression on everyone she met and interacted with. All of her acquaintances retell their favorite stories of their dealings with Shirley with humor and fondness. Private services held. Donations in Shirley's honor may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati or the SPCA of Cincinnati.www.weilkahnfuneralhome.com.

I loved Grandma so very much. I miss her everyday, but deep down I truly know that she is here not just in me but in all of us. She was so funny, she always had the silliest laugh and whenever she laughed I laughed, everyone in the room laughs. I am one of the 8 great grandchildren. One of Shirley Bernstein's!

I was lucky enough to rent from Mrs. Bernstein on 3rd St in Covington 20 years ago. As charming as the property was, Mrs. Bernstein was the biggest selling point with her dedication, dynamism, wit, sharp mind & tongue, incredibly compassionate heart, and swiftly pointing out everything that needed to be addressed with her cane. She will always hold high stature in my mind and heart. Cheers to a great lady and truly worthwhile character and human being.

Linda, Jimmy and Alan,
My deepest sympathies for a wonderful lady. Growing up next door to you provided wonderful memories and lots of crazy antics! I also remember Gretchen and Prince ( your 2 beautiful German Shepherd dogs ). I will always have fond memories of both your parents. They were always so much fun and an active part of my childhood.

I am so sorry to hear about Shirley! Ben and she made such a great couple. I first met them when Ben and I were in Village Players in Ft. Thomas. My dad, Lambert Hehl, was looking for a place to kick off his campaign for KY State Attorney General in 1971. I told him to call the Bernstein's at El Greco. Dad told Ben
his name and Ben didn't recognize it. So then dad had to tell Ben that he was Susan's dad, instead of me saying I was Lambert's daughter! That was the beginning of many good lunches with Lefty and Jim. I will always remember the great high chair that they gave us when our first daughter was born. I will miss both of them and their wonderful stories from their years in Ecuador! Glad they are together again!

Shirley was a fine Queen among Women - Super intelligent, thoughtful, generous, and so very, very funny, with a beautiful, kind soul as well. I have been so lucky to be able to call her my aunt. My thoughts are with all of her close relatives and I send them my love. Sue T.

I fondly remember Shirley and the entire Bernstein family. We were neighbors in Bond Hill. Shirley had a dynamic personality. Hardworking. Kind. Her death leaves me with great sadness. May Shirley's death always be a blessing. Gail Weintraub Stern

I am very saddened that this Great Wonderful Woman is gone from our presence. I worked for her during the 1980's starting at Shirley's Restaurant on Vine Street. At that time I didn't know how much I needed her influence in my life. She was the only person that took the interest in me to become not only a good employee, but a good person with integrity. She was the most honest person I had ever worked with. I still live by the principles she taught me and I will never, ever forget her. It was a "HIGH HONOR" to work with her. My tears will not hold back. I can truly say I love her. I missed her the moment I heard the news. To her family, my prayers are with you. Vivian Williamson, Manager for Mike Fink 1988-1991

Shirley created the Exciting Environment of all the Bernstien restaurants - she was truly the First Lady of Family Owned Fine Dinning; glamorous, enjoyable, radiant and positive - & she know how to turn tables and make everyone and anyone feel at home! What a family legacy she left of the Glamour Era of Family owned favorite restaurants in Cincinnati !
