Thomas Avril Obituary

Thomas B. Avril

Cincinnati - Thomas B. Avril, a longtime executive in the metal alloy business, died Monday, Aug. 20 at age 93.

A lifelong Cincinnatian and graduate of Walnut Hills High School, Mr. Avril studied engineering at Purdue University through a U.S. Navy officer training program and served as a commissary officer in the Philippines soon after the end of World War II.

Upon his return, he worked with his father, George, at the G.A. Avril Co. and was later joined by brother John, producing brass, bronze, and other non-ferrous alloys for sale to manufacturers. Mr. Avril enjoyed traveling and entertaining with his wife, Diana, whom he met on a blind date in 1957 and married the following year.

He was zealous about eating fruits and vegetables, bringing home sackfuls of kohlrabi, rutabaga, and other unusual fresh fare long before the health-food craze became widespread. Mr. Avril was a fan of classic cars, sailing, and antique furniture, and he was an avid skier until his mid-80s, often traveling with family to hit the slopes in Colorado.

He was a longtime member and leader of the Seventh Presbyterian Church until it closed, later joining the Indian Hill Church.

In addition to his wife and brother, he is survived by a sister, Susan Schneider of Menlo Park, Calif., daughter Diana Tully of New York City, son Tom Avril of suburban Philadelphia, and three granddaughters, Eleanor Avril, Charlotte Avril, and Avril Rose Tully.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26 at Indian Hill Church, 6000 Drake Rd.
