Walter BUNKER Obituary

BUNKER

Walter S., beloved husband for 67 years to Martha Heekin Bunker, died peacefully December 2, 2014 at the age of 90. Walter left an enduring legacy of love, laughter, and Christian devotion. He is loved and will be remembered by his 'lady wife' Martha, sons Greg (deceased), David, Seton, Chris, Tim, Jay, and daughters Julie Strahl, Ann Bunker, Mary Ragland, and Marci Matvey. He was a devoted brother to John, Tom (deceased), Mary Martyne (deceased), and Elizabeth (Bo) Howland. He was a great father-in-law to Jim Strahl, Stephanie Pierson, Kathie Nutting Bunker, Paul Matvey, Grace Martinez Bunker, Jennifer Helwig Bunker, and Robin Mally Bunker. Walter is also a grandparent to and will be sorely missed by Jesse, Simon, Andy, Patrick, Jori, Cassie, Gus, Brian, Aimee, Emilee, J.D., Max, Rose, Paul Seton, Andrea, Allie, David, Mark, Sarah, and Patrick Donovan. He is also a great grandparent to Bella, Airaya, Roman, and Delaney. Walter was born on Christmas day 1923 to John L. Bunker and Dorothy Schmidt Bunker. He grew up in Cincinnati attending Summit Country Day, St. Xavier high school, the College Conservatory of Music, Notre Dame, and Xavier University. Walter was known as a great writer, teacher, lector, master bridge player, public speaker, and story teller extroardinaire throughout his life. Walter was a scholar of classic literature and music, and in his last twenty years published numerous short stories. Recently, the book 'Change Happens' was published by Losantiville Press with a selection of short stories, three of which were contributed by Walter at the age of 90. He did so while suffering from lung cancer and undergoing 13 radiation treatments. During this same time Walter graduated cum laude at age 90 from Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. He is now the oldest graduate of Xavier University. Visitation will be held at Geo. H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home, Mt. Lookout, Friday, December 5 from 4-7pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gertrude Church, Madeira, Saturday, December 6 at 9:00am. A special word of thanks to our Hospice family caregivers for making his final days peaceful. What a blessing to have had Walter as a friend in his later. years. His great humility and faith made our friendship all the more genuine as I had little awareness of the great talents and achievements in his life. He is truly missed by many for sure these five years after his passing

A very long time ago, I was friends with Mr. Bunker's daughter, Nancy. I spent countless hours at their house on Hardisty. Nancy and I went to Cardinal Pacelli grade school together and in 7th grade, my father died from cancer. Those dark days were further darkened by a mother who simply could not cope. I spent countless hours at the Bunker's house and knew her siblings well. I can still, all these many years late, tell you each and every room, and even the furnishings in that home. Jeanette was their housekeeper and a loving, kind person to everyone. Mr. and Mrs. Bunker showed me love and kindness during a sad time for a young girl.

I will never forget that. Rest in Peace Mr. Bunker and may God bless you and and keep you and hold you in the palm of His hand.

Walter Bunker was one special man in my life; grandfather to Max and Rose forever and my father-in-law for 15 years. PopPop to all, he gave me many incredible, moving, special and sometimes silly memories that I will cherish forever. Walt showed compassion to all humanity and had one of the best senses of humor I have ever encountered. I love you Pop Pop and know you are giggling up in heaven whenever i say the word (non-word) venatic! Love, T

My deepest sympathy goes out to you Dave and Kathie, and to the all the Bunker Family, as well as, Walter Bunker's friends. I am Kathie and Dave Bunker's friend, and I know that even though I did not meet Walter in person, that my life has been touched and made better because of Walter's life influence on his family. Thank you Walter, your love of Christ and gift of story-telling have given me 2 wonderful, dear friends. Thank you, Walter.

Walter Bunker is my Uncle & Godfather. I received an email message from LinkedIn tonight (Dec 7th!) that read "Walter Bunker has endorsed you." I can't explain why or how I got that message, but I sure felt his love!
I have been thinking about him, my Aunt Martha & all of my cousins all weekend. I hear that my Cousin Dave delivered a wonderful message about his dad.
I'm fortunate to have known him and feel that he is not gone. He's just on the other side of the glass. :)
May God Bless and comfort his family and all those who miss him.

Dear Marci, Mary and Family,
I will remember your dad fondly dating back to Marci's and Paul's wedding at your home on Hardisty! When we reacquainted ourselves at St. Gert's, he referred to me as "One of those Keefe twins". He never forgot me. He was a fabulous man and one who brought joy to all who knew him. God bless you all at this time.

How blest to have had Walter pass through our lives, family and acquaintances alike. He brought me closer to a union with the Holy Spirit and that is a "mind-blower."

I am sorry to lose Walter, as I enjoyed talking to him on many topics. He could make plays at bridge that out-smarted me, which not many can do. I will be out of town.

To The Bunker Family,
The world has lost one of the most beautiful individuals that graced us with his presence. How lucky we were to have him.
Walter gave me a chance when I was going through a "life change" and hired me. I am still selling real estate and have been for 35 years.
Thank you Walter. May Walter's memory be for a blessing.

Wonderful Walter,
I bet you're already comparing notes with St. Peter and cracking jokes with Thomas Aquinas. How our writing group will miss you!
