Agnes Barber Jones

Asheville - Agnes Barber Jones was a native of Gastonia and a daughter of the late Lonnie Green Barber and Clara Geneva Nelson Barber.

She attended the Gastonia public schools and attended Stillman College and received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Winston-Salem State University. Mrs. Jones continued her education at Columbia University, NY receiving a masters degree in childhood education.

She began her teaching career in Bessimer City and taught in Durham, High Point and retired from the Asheville city schools.

Mrs. Jones was the widow of the late Rev. James T. Jones, Sr., former pastor of Berry Temple United Methodist Church, where she supported his ministry. She was a member of the Berry Temple Choir, United Methodist Women, Church Women United and the Brooks Howell Auxiliary. Mrs. Jones was a member of Beta Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. In the Shiloh community, she was a member of the Roosevelt Park Community Club and the Busy Hand Club.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by sisters, Lucile Barber Glenn and Hattie Mae Barber Woods.

Surviving family to cherish her memory are her son, James T. Jones, Jr. and his wife, Shermaine; grandsons, Daniel and Benjamin Jones; brother and sister-in-laws, Rev. and Mrs. Fred Jones, Bessie Jones, Willie Mae Jones; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Berry Temple United Methodist Church with Rev. Patricia Bacon officiating.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to United Methodist Women, c/o Berry Temple United Methodist Church, 34 College Place, Asheville, NC 28801.
