Alberta Soles Hawkins

Asheville - Alberta Soles Hawkins, 96, left this world on April 2, 2021, following a period of failing health.

A native of McColl, SC, Alberta lived most of her life in Asheville, NC. She was the daughter of the late Luther Soles and Margie Ella Gause Soles. She was preceded in death in 1967 by her ex-husband, Willard Riley Hawkins, originally of Dillon, SC.

Alberta is survived by her son, Philip Hawkins and his wife Sylvia, of Asheville. She is also survived by her sister, Irene Soles Davis, of Siler City, NC.

Alberta worked at Vanderbilt Shirt Company for forty years, retiring in 1989. Although she had a High School diploma, Alberta also completed several GED programs, in support of friends who had not graduated from High School.

Alberta often said, "I'm from South Carolina and I know how to be gracious." She was also generous with her time and money, volunteering for local groups to help the underprivileged and making frequent donations to national organizations.

Her family thanks the staff of the Brian Center in Weaverville and Hospice for their compassionate care in Mrs. Hawkins' final days.

The family will hold a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations to your local Meals On Wheels are preferred. Also, donations to the North Carolina Arboretum may be given online at ncarboretum.org.
