Bryna Liebowitz Obituary

A standard obituary doesn't begin to capture Bryna (Slosman) Liebowitz, who passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010, in her home in Asheville, NC surrounded by her family. A reluctant matriarch, Bryna was the thread and the glue: she both wove the family tapestry, never missing a family event and, even in her passing, was able to bring the extended family together to form new bonds. Gathering to remember her, her family compiled a short list to describe Bryna's essence, soul and neshama: beaming, heartfelt, adventurous, fun-loving, fabulous, classy, classic, graceful, Renaissance woman, wise, spiritual, sage, straightforward, independent, accepting, strong, caring, beautiful, Nettie, light-filled, warm and family-minded.

Bryna was the eldest child of the Nash-Liebowitz family - a family started when two sets of siblings married forming a strongly intertwined family tree. Bryna had two younger brothers, Benson (d. 2001), married to Sandy Slosman and Freddy, married to Ellen Slosman. Bryna married Teddy Liebowitz (d. 1987) on November 29, 1947.

Bryna and Teddy loved each other and the sea, so after retiring from the family business, Liberty Industries in Cincinnati, OH, they relocated to Boca Raton, FL, where they spent as much time as possible enjoying a sunset cocktail on "For Sentimental Reasons," their boat named after their favorite Nat King Cole song.

She leaves two children, daughter Barbara (Liebowitz), married to Steve Miller and son Eddie Liebowitz. Bryna leaves 5 grandchildren, Lauren Miller, Abby (Miller), married to Nate Day, Cassie Miller, Teddy Liebowitz and Max Liebowitz, along with a string of cousins, nieces, nephews and ‘other relations' who will miss her dearly.

Funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Beth Israel Synagogue, with internment to follow at Lou Pollock Cemetery. Minyan details will be announced at the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be sent to the American Heart Association, Pet Rescue by Judy, Orlando, FL or the Ted Liebowitz Children's Education Fund at Beth Israel Synagogue.

Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent through the website www.morrisfamilyfuneralhome.com

We were so sad to hear of Bryna's passing and will miss her visits with Coco. She was a wonderful lady and so thoughtful. Of course, she would always bring her treats for us; she would bring Coco for a stay and say, "I happened to bake some cookies". They were delicious. We remember her last visit; just before Thanksgiving when she and Coco showed up with a beautiful Pumpkin Pound Cake that she "happen to bake". She lovingly and warmly touched all our lives in such a special way. We miss you, Bryna...

I am so sad to hear that we will be losing Bryna as a friend, and a neighbor. What a classy, neat, knowledgeable lady she was! We got to know her when we moved to The Timbers, down the street from her, and immediately she became a highlight. We feel privileged to have known her, and are very happy to have special memories of her. Right before we returned to our "real" home in Naples, Fl, in November, Bryna had us down with another couple for drinks. She told us great stories that we hadn't heard....of her ancestors arrival in the US....and the stories of hardship and triumph. They were so fascinating, that we, in fact, passed them on to other people! So sad that we will return in June and she won't be there. But, she made an indelible mark. Loved the blogs and pictures you had online. So loving, so personal, and so fun to see. Glad we could share your Bryna.

I worked with Bryna each time she came in the store. She was such an inspiration to me and so fun and lovable! I always enjoyed her stopping in after she would have her hair done. I certainly will miss her smiling face, she was a very special lady... Carol Smith (Yesterday's Tree, Asheville, N.C.)

Bryna, a very special lady and wonderful neighbor. Her calls to me via phone always began "Betty, Bryna," followed by whatever message. We frequently met in the yard and CoCo was always present. She had an enduring warmth and radiance. I loved her dearly. Betty McClung, Asheville, North Carolina

Oh yes, I remember growing up and hanging out in Asheville with Bryna. She was one of my best friends whom I loved dearly. Always cheerful and fun to be with. I have thought of her often through the years and wished that I could have talked and reminisced with her. I was blessed to have known her and I am sure that you will have loving memories.

"Vibrant" doesn't do justice. After meeting Bryna for the first time, I started to run into her everywhere: gathering with women half her age in a grocery parking lot to go to a pool party, at a wine tasting, out to dinner, walking for exercise down Kimberly Avenue. She savored it all. She will be missed. I regret there was no opportunity to say goodbye, but was comforted to learn that family was with her. My condolences.
