Don Burleson Obituary

Don Burleson

Barnardsville/Kissimmee, FL - Don Burleson, 90, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2012 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Hospice Solace Center after battling two severe brain injuries for several months. He was born November 11, 1920 in Buncombe County, NC to the late Roma and Vernell Burleson. He was of the Baptist faith.

In younger days, Mr. Burleson loved boating and waterskiing. Before retirement, Mr. Burleson was co-owner of Barnardsville Tomato Packing Company for many years. He served in the US Navy for six years and was a veteran of World War II. Prior to returning to North Carolina, he was the co-owner of an auto mechanic garage in Portsmouth, VA. While living 70 years in Barnardsville, Mr. Burleson was very involved in politics.

Mr. Burleson was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his loving wife of 67 years, Joyce Burleson, who passed away in May, 2011; his wonderful brother, Drexel Burleson; and sister, Juanita Levinson Jacobson.

Mr. Burleson is survived by his three children: Pat Carter (Roy) of Glendale Springs, NC, Sandy Rhineberger (John) of Palm Springs, CA, and Donna Merrell of Fletcher; six grandchildren: Todd Carter of West Jefferson, NC, Andrea Carter Gimlin (Wiley) of West Jefferson, Stacey Carter Miller (Chris) of Crumpler, NC, Shane Myers (Fon) of Whittier, CA, Rosalind Myers of Phoenix, AZ and John Merrell of Fletcher; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Violet Demastus of Wappingers Falls, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family is forever grateful and wishes to thank Mr. Burleson's nieces, Judy Bridges and Kathy Gillis Johnston, along with great-nephews, Tim and Hugh Bridges, for their help with loving and wonderful care for their uncle.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 9, 2011 at Burleson Cemetery, North Fork Road, Barnardsville, NC, with the Rev. Toby Anderson officiating. Military graveside rites will be provided by the Mars Hill VFW Post 5483.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mr. Burleson's name to Hospitality House of Boone, NC (an emergency shelter and support for the homeless). Sorry to hear of Mr. Burleson's passing. We rented a house from him in the early 1980's and enjoyed time spent with him and Mrs. Burleson. He was a wonderful person with many great stories. My sympathy to the family.
